Why October is my Favorite Time of the Year

Greetings MFCC!

This is fellow member Stephen Madden, letting you know that the trout stocking trucks are out and about this October-one of the reasons why this is my favorite time of the year.

These trucks are stocking what I like to call Truckbows!

I caught a nice, freshly stocked trout this past Wednesday at Little Pond in Plymouth, and while there I talked to a fisheries employee from Belchertown, who had made the long trip for the stocking.

My local ponds, such as Long Pond and Little Pond in Plymouth, as well as some ponds on the Cape have been, or will be stocked in the next few days.

You can catch these guys fairly easily once freshly stocked.

Fly guys can use Wooly Worms and Muddler Minnows. Spinning gear fishermen can go with shiny spoons and small crank baits, which are a sure bet!

Powerbait fished on a small #6 hook and suspended a foot above the bottom can by dynamite. Use a non lead slip weight, cast out and let your rod rest on a forked twig. You are now ready for action!

Multiple Species In One Day

October is a wonderfull time of year because you can catch multiple species of fish on the same day!

There are albies...

Last year False Albacore were caught well into November in places
like the Elizabeth Islands.

Stripers...

There are still big striped bass being caught in southern New Hampshire, which could bode well for us on the Cape!

Tatoug...

And Sea Bass to name just a few.

Sea Bass can still be found throughout Cape Cod, but they
must be released during October.

Freshwater trout species include Rainbows...

Rainbows can be very aggressive and are a great species to target with the kids.

But there are also Browns, Tiger, and Brook trout. Plus in SE Massachusetts we have some Native Sea Run Brookies, which are fun and challenging to target.

October is the best month of the year in my opinion. Go have at it and good luck fishing!

What do you think? Let me know by commenting below.

  • Brian some big Browns have been caught at night using shiners floated on a lighted bobber on the cape’s ponds ! I have always kept it simple cooking trout, pan fried with butter and a bread crumbs. On occasion I will butterfly the fish, brush it with creme de menthe, broil and just before done I top it with slivered almonds for my version of Trout Almondine ?

  • Thanks for the report Stephen! I’m getting ready to make the switch over to trout however I’m still getting stripers up to 34″ up here in Scarborough ME! When I lived in the boston area all I did was trout fish. I loved October-December, it seems that time of year the BIG brown trout start cruising the shore line. I used to target them with small shiners fished under a float or small silver cast masters. Any recommendations on cooking trout?
