Week 2 of Exploring & Fishing Costa Rica

The fishing the past few days has been pretty good.

Yesterday Ryan caught barracuda, snapper and a bunch of other species hand-lining from a boat with a local Tico fisherman.

Our refrigerator is now stocked with jacks, barracudas, mackerels, snappers and other fish which we don't know the names of!​

​You never know what might bite next!

You can read more about the fishing at the bottom of this post.  For now, let's get to the adventure side of things!

Ryan and I have now been in Costa Rica for a week, and I already understand just how "good" we have it back at home in the US. Most local people here in CR don’t have luxuries like air conditioning and windows to keep the bugs out.

The next time I start complaining about a luxury problem (like when my Instagram won't load) I remind myself myself that it's not so bad.

The First 24 – Day #1 in Costa Rica

December 1st had been on my mind for a long time.

The thought of standing on a beach far from just about everything I had grown accustomed to was unimaginable.

The idea of sleeping under a canopy of palms and listening to the sounds of a wild jungle just didn't seem real.​

Yet today this has become reality, and here I am, on a jungle peninsula in Costa Rica.

Ryan has been talking about doing something like this for years. And for years, I have been accepting the fact that wherever we chose to go on the map would definitely be a place where fishing was the main purpose of the trip.

I am after all dating a fisherman.

We started walking down the dirt road in an attempt to find the jungle house, when a very friendly local named Jonathon offered to give us a ride.

Jonathon grew up in the area and is about our age, so we immediately hit it off, and once again, the Costa Rican locals proved to be nothing but wonderful. We hopped in his truck and off we went down the dirt road.

The house we are in is out of this world. Dark hardwood floors, open windows with screens on every inch of wall space, and the sound of waves crashing right in front of our house.

We made a weekend out of it, and I can easily say this was the best weekend ever.

I would like to consider myself a foodie.  Any time I travel anywhere, my first thought is where to eat.  I love to try new places and find those hidden gems that not many people have heard about.

The Life of a Fisherman’s Girlfriend

If you know me at all, I'm not much of a fish person.  I squirm at the thought of touching a worm and really only would like to see a fish seasoned and grilled with a nice lemon wedge to garnish.

This other side of fishing, I will admit, threw me for a loop.  The first time I went fishing with Ryan and wrestled in a 25-pound fish, I'm pretty sure that was my "in" in this relationship.

I Never Liked Bluefish, Until I Tried This Simple Recipe

Here’s something to wrap your head around – bluefish that tastes delicious!

I’ve never been a big fan of bluefish – their sharp teeth and oily, fishy and worst of all blue meat, make them less than desirable (at least for me).

For a long time Ryan and I have tried to figure out a simple and delicious way to cook bluefish without using mayonnaise.

I caught some tautog from shore just over a week ago and brought them home to Lauren to see what she could do with the fish cooking-wise. Tautog is a very delicious fish and I was excited to see what Lauren would come up with for a recipe.
