Late July Dog Days Fishing Report with Sam Mullen of the Goose Hummock

by Kevin Collins

The dog days of summer have arrived on Cape Cod, bringing scorching temperatures that push the mercury north of 90 degrees creating challenging conditions. Sam Mullen of the Goose Hummock Shop in Orleans provides details on how this late July period requires a tactical shift in approach, moving away from traditional surfcasting patterns.

Monomoy: Most Consistent Summer Fishing

When Cape Cod Bay turns into a proverbial bathtub and surf casting becomes a test of patience rather than skill, Monomoy emerges as the premier destination for consistent action. The area's unique geography creates a perfect storm of fishing conditions that remain productive even during the hottest weeks of summer.

The constant influx of different water masses from the east creates perpetual turbulence around Monomoy, keeping water temperatures cooler and more stable than other areas. This turbulence acts as a conveyor belt for baitfish, creating a feeding frenzy that attracts multiple species throughout the tidal cycles. During these peak summer weeks, anglers can effectively cast into the rips targeting striped bass with soft plastics and traditional offerings like bucktails.

The diversity of species available at Monomoy during late July makes it an angler's paradise. Striped bass remain the primary target, but bluefish are making their presence known! For those seeking bottom fish, sea bass are readily available in the rip areas within the three-mile zone, providing excellent action on lighter tackle.

In this report Sam goes into great detail about:

  • Productive methods to target striped bass, sea bass, bluefish, and fluke at Monomoy
  • Fluke reports from a variety if different areas
  • Cape Cod Bay boat and surfcasting report
  • Backside beaches night surfcasting report
  • Bluefish and bonito available from shore or boat off the south side
  • Albies are now on the horizon in August
  • Blue fin tuna bite continues to be productive in several areas
