October Flounder Fishing Trips

by Ryan Collins

This fall I am extremely excited to be offering trips My Fishing Cape Cod members to go fishing for winter flounder with none other than captain Mike Fowler of Bad Dog Sportfishing!

Captain Mike is an authority on Cape Cod winter flounder fishing. He's also been a featured speaker at numerous My Fishing Cape Cod events where he's shared invaluable winter flounder fishing advice and tips.

People travel from near and far to go flounder fishing with captain Mike. In fact, his springtime Cape Cod Bay flounder fishing trips are often fully booked up months in advance.

However, what most people don't realize is there's a fall flounder bite in Cape Cod Bay too. The fishing is not as "lights out" as it is during the spring, but the bite is still pretty darn good all October.

The area captain Mike fishes has one of the best populations of winter flounder in New England. Here's a couple of Mike's many happy customers!

Flounder lay along the bottom and eat small fish, worms, clams, and mussels. During these trips you'll be drift fishing along the bottom using bait. Mike can supply rods and reels but you're free to bring you own if you prefer.

Catching winter flounder is a lot of fun, but the real draw of these fish is for eating. Without a doubt, flounder are one of Cape Cod's most delicious and best eating fish!

Flounder have a wonderful white fillet that can be prepared many different ways. Flounder are highly regarded as a great fish to eat.

As mentioned above, the best flounder fishing of the year happens during the spring, but October is a close second. The nice thing is that in the event the flounder aren't cooperating, captain Mike's backup plan is tautog!

Tautog are a hard fighting and fun fish to catch. Fortunately for us captain Mike knows many of the spots in Cape Cod Bay where the tog like to hideout. Tautog are also a wonderful eating fish.

Flounder will be the target species for these trips. However, if the flounder aren't cooperating, then captain Mike will take you to some of his best spots in Cape Cod Bay for big fall tautog.

Mike's boat The Bad Dog, is a 31ft BHM. It's a down-east style Maine designed hull that provides an exceptionally comfortable ride and safety in all weather conditions.

The Bad Dog is equipped with the most recent and up-to-date Garmin electronics. The boat is powered by a 350hp Caterpillar diesel motor paired with 300 gallons of fuel. It has a dry wheelhouse, a toilet, and a large back deck with plenty of room for fishing.

As of right now flounder trips are for My Fishing Cape Cod members only. The price will be $265/person and available dates are:

If it's less than 7 days notice, then I will do my best to find someone who can take your spot, but I can't guarantee I'll be able to. If I'm successful with finding a replacement, then I can give you a full refund. Of course if you're able to find someone who can take your spot, then that works too.

All-in-all these flounder trips with Mike and Bad Dog Sportfishing are shaping up to be a blast! I am really excited to add Mike to our team of MFCC group trip captains.
