What better way to give back then to spend a few hours cleaning up the Cape Cod Canal.

As anglers, we certainly have an intrinsic interest in keeping this resource as clean as possible!

This year's Cape Cod Canal cleanup is happening on Saturday April 21st. This will be the 18th annual cleanup!

The cleanup is hosted by the US Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with AmeriCorps Cape Cod.

I am looking to organize a group of My Fishing Cape Codders to help make this canal cleanup a big success.

There is no cost to be part of the cleanup, but please register online by clicking this link, so I know how many people to expect.

In addition to picking up trash there will be various small maintenance and gardening projects, as well as pollinator habitat improvements. There will also be complimentary snacks and food, plus interactive educational booths.

Please bring weather appropriate clothes and water. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.

Please plan to meet at 9:30am at the Buzzard's Bay Recreation Center, 33 Canal Service Road, Bourne, MA 02532. There will be a shuttle transporting volunteers to-and-fro various locations along the canal. The cleanup will end around 2pm.

Rain or shine!

  • Hey Ryan,
What a great idea. A long time ago I gave up on feeling like a tree hugger as I picked up trash where ever I happened to be.
Last summer was my first time concentrating on canal fishing and in my humble opinion it was the overnight fishermen that were the worst offenders at leaving tackle packaging, fishing line, Dunkin Donuts cups, beer bottles and what ever else these “fishermen” chose to leave behind. I hesitate to even call them fishermen as in my humble opinion, a fisherman is a trustee of the environment and leaves nothing behind. I suspect these are the same folks who toss all manner of trash into their open truck beds, knowing full well the air currents will sweep that trash onto our roads.
On one trip to the canal, my fishing buddy and I arrived to our spot before dawn. As the morning light appeared, the visible amount of trash left behind was disheartening. We departed with an almost full bag of trash that we disposed of, leaving that spot better than we had found it. Safer too, since we also removed broken bottles that surely could have injured a fellow fisherman.
Being a big believer in “living in the solution”, and hanging out with like minded folks, I will be glad to sign up to help on April 21st. See you then.

  • Ryan, I’ve been to this canal clean up before and I’m going again this year. I think it’s a great idea, and it’s great to see it’s finally getting the publicity it deserves. It’s also good to show even the most responsible anglers that every thing they bring in has to come out of the area or into a trash can. You would be surprised how much fishing related trash you can find on the banks of the canal it’s scary and it teaches a good lesson.
