Who Will Catch The First 40 Inch Striper?

Ryan Turcotte

Hello My Fishing Cape Cod! My name is Ryan Turcotte (not be confused with MFCC founder Ryan Collins-there are a lot of Ryans on this website!) and for the 2nd year in a row I will be helping to organize this season's My Fishing Cape Cod Derby.

If you are not familiar with the derby, then you can click here to view the leaderboard, where you can also learn more about the rules, prizes and competition.

In this post I want to introduce to you a "mini competition" within our season long fishing derby, to see which of our members will be the first to catch a 40 inch striper this season.

The Prize

First and foremost, the prize for catching the first 40 inch striper of the season will be a pack of the new spook-style plugs from Daddy Mac Lures.

Weighing in at 2.9oz and 3.6oz, the Reel Deal RD Bomb is a topwater plug which is perfect for going after big stripers whether by beach or by boat.

The My Fishing Cape Cod member who catches the first 40 inch striper of the season will be mailed a free 7 inch and a free 9 inch version of the RD Bomb. Not too shabby!

How To Enter

Submitting fish to our derby is simple and easy. First, you must be signed up as a member of My Fishing Cape Cod. If you are not a member, then you can click here to sign up and to learn more about membership.

Catch and release is highly encouraged, which is why we ask you take a length and girth measurement of your catch. Keep the fish wet at all times, and do your absolute best to make the measuring process as quick as possible, without sacrificing accuracy.

Once you have your length and girth measurements, head on over to the Submit Your Catch page to submit your fish within 48 hours of catching it. Include all the required information and send at least one high resolution photo that clearly shows the size of the fish to [email protected].

That's pretty much it! From everything I am hearing there are much larger stripers beginning to trickle into the waters surrounding Cape Cod & the Islands, and I know it won't be long until the first 40 inch fish is caught by one of our members.

Tight lines! ?

  • Thank you Ryan(s) for running a derby last year, and bringing it back again for 2018! I look forward to following the leader board and reading the catch stories.

I think we all fish a little harder when there is a derby in play.
    See you out there.

    • Looking forward to seeing you out on the water this season Steve! We have some great prizes in play this season, hopefully you catch a slob!

  • After fishing with Ryan Collins, Ryan Turcotte, and Ryan Franklin, I am ready to change my name to Ryan as a way to improve my fishing success. After a few early MFCC trips my friend Ned Bean said “What’s it with these guys named Ryan? They can all fish like crazy.”
Ned and I are fishing Block Island next weekend. Does a 40″ from Rhode Island qualify?

    • It really does get confusing Dex! Unfortunately we made a decision to exclude Block Island and it’s surrounding waters from the derby this year, but mainland RI does count. You can see the area included in the derby on the derby page. I still hope slay there next weekend. Looking forward to Cutty in July!
