Surfcasting Greater Boston for Striped Bass

Ryan Collins

This October I've been surfcasting different locations, including spots around the Greater Boston area, in search of late-season striped bass.

I am having fun exploring new places, and catching a few stripers here and there.

During this trip (which took place on October 25th) I was surprised to encounter hundreds of cormorants, diving and feeding.

With so many cormorants in the area, I figured there must be bait around. Can you imagine the amount of baitfish required to feed a giant flock of cormorants?

The tide was dead low, exposing a lot of mud and muck. I probably should of worn sturdy boots (instead of my soft-soled wading booties) because there was sharp glass mixed in among the mud.

Just before sunset, and soon after the flood tide started, I felt a very light tap on the end of my line, which I guessed might of been a fish.

15 minutes later the action started heating up. By 5:30pm I had caught 2 schoolies, and lost 2 other bass which were probably between 28-32 inches.

These were the first Boston-area striped bass I have ever caught.I also received another half dozen missed hits from fish that whacked the end of my Canal Magic Swimmer without getting the hook.

The season is certainly not over yet! According to this post in our forum, there are bass blitzes still happening on Cape Cod.
