27 Miles of Surfcasting the Beaches of Outer Cape Cod

At the end of the 2014 fishing season, I read the book Cape Cod by Henry David Thoreau. The text recaps Thoreau's visit to the Cape during the mid 1800's, including his walk along the dunes from Nauset Inlet to Provincetown.

After reading the book I felt inspired to do the same, yet I would walk with a fishing pole in hand.

This September, god willing, I am going to walk and fish the 27 mile stretch of sand from Nauset Inlet to Race Point, and share the experience with you here on My Fishing Cape Cod.

Additionally, I am teaming up with Shane Uriot (front right) and Jeremy Quaglia (back left) to capture the adventure professionally on video.

Shane Uriot and Jeremy Quaglia

These guys are video professionals who approached me with the idea of creating a show about surfcasting, and I am pumped to have them aboard the MFCC team!

Jeremy also co-owns Home Stead Hard Cider and Shane recently produced a documentary called "American Brewed." Not too shabby for a couple mid-twenty something guys!

This past week I wanted to give Shane and Jeremy an idea of what to expect for the 23 mile trek. So I picked the guys up and headed towards some of the hollows between the dunes which would provide access points for their crews and for filming.

I had the wonderful opportunity of sharing some amazing locations, environments and landscapes with Shane and Jeremy.

Once we got onto the beach we all began to get excited about this journey. In particular I cannot wait to explore new territory, go on the longest walk of my life, and hopefully catch some big fish!

Our plan is to film the journey and share it with you here on MFCC. If things go real well, perhaps television networks like Comcast, NESN, Discovery, Outdoor Network etc. will be interested in featuring the journey on their network.

Race Point Coast Guard Station

As with all the content here on the site, the focus will be on the environment, the experience and journey. The "hunt" for a big bass will be integral, but catching fish will be a bonus.

Race Point Sunset

We will also have several My Fishing Cape Codders making special appearances, and I will introduce you to these great people throughout the coming weeks.

For me this 23 mile trek will be a challenge. I know my legs will be sore and I still don't know what I'm going to do for food, water, supplies, rest etc. However I know all the details will fall into place.

I am also looking forward to using all my resources, knowledge and luck to find fish among this vast stretch of coastline. If you have fished this area of Cape Cod before then you know what I mean!

The beach seems to go on forever...

I will keep you posted with the latest developments!

Tight lines and take care,

Ryan

  • Ryan, have a great time. Spent a couple of days on Race Point recently and saw tons of whales, seals and people catching stripers and blues. (not me, of course.)
Looking forward to your posts and the forum about this adventure. Where else could we get such excellent fishing info and book reports and recommendations.

    • That is one of the few areas where you can see that much life from the beach. Where else can you watch whales from shore? Pretty amazing.

Glad you continue to enjoy MFCC. So happy to have you as part of the site. I am sure the stripers and blues will cooperate better for you the next time around. Never give up!

  • I just finished The Outermost House by Henry Beston and just yesterday started reading Cape cod by Thoreau where he mentions the hike from eastham to P-town and I thought it would a fantastic adventure except I did not think to include a fishing rod.
Wish you the best on your adventure and will be following your reports

  • Sounds like a blast Ryan! I’m heading up from NJ mid Oct to fish those beaches for 5 days. I look forward to watching your film.

  • I am really looking forward to this! I am trying to learn much more about surf fishing and would love to explore the outer cape.

  • Ryan,

Fantastic idea. The back beach is a special place year-round, but Sept-Oct are the best. I am headed up this weekend and hope to spend a lot of September tramping that beach ..Coast Guard, Nauset, Newcomb, Balston, Head of the Meadow, Race Point right around to Herring Cove. Maybe we will bump into each other and maybe we can get a striper or blue if the seals allow. Last time I went to Coast Guard at low tide I figured at least 200 seals in sight. I do want to try Lauren’s blue fish recipe. She got one for roast seal or seal stuffed shark?

    • Sounds great Mark! I’m sure between the two of us we will eventually get into some good fish, despite the seals and sharks.

The bluefish recipe was tremendous. Roasted seal and stuffed shark may be next on the list! lol

  • What a great idea and adventure Ryan. Envious. Looking forward to following along on the site, and hearing how this develops. Good luck!
