Garet Suomala
Hello My Fishing Cape Cod! It's your favorite blogger again, Garet Suomala.
This time I have something a little different to share with all of you. So pull right up your favorite chair and enjoy.
Today I am going to talk about something I have always wanted to do, but have yet to get it done - to catch a bluefin tuna.
So follow along to hear my story of how it almost happened during 2016, and my plans to try again for a tuna later this season.
Prince Edward Island - 2016
Last summer Ryan, my dad, Ryan's dad, and Ryan's wedding party went all the way up to North Lake Harbour in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Our goal was to have a fun time together, but we of course also wanted to catch a giant bluefin tuna.
After all PEI is world famous for tuna fishing.
While we where getting ready to go out on the water, there was a building at the dock with tuna tails nailed to its planks.
I know some folks may think it is sad that beautiful fish gave up their tails for some decoration, but I must say it gave that shack some pizzazz!
All of us were wicked pumped to get out the water.
We had a pretty great captain too - Troy Bruce from Bruce Bros. Charters
Captain Troy really knew what he was doing and was a real nice guy.
I wish all MFCC members could enjoy a day of tuna fishing with captain Troy.
Both of our trips were uneventful tuna-catching wise, but we saw a few tuna on the surface and on the sounder, and we still had a ton of fun.
I wonder who that guy front and center in the chair is? 😉
I give Troy and his first mate a lot of credit because they did their very best to hook a tuna for us during our stay in PEI. We even stayed out past dark!
However I guess the tuna fishing Gods where not cooperating with us that day.
Cape Cod - 2017
The pic below was taken just south of good ole' Cape Cod. Ryan and MFCC member Kurt Saraceno have caught what looks to be a yellowfin tuna.
This is another type of tuna that is on my bucket list, however I may need one to just fall out of the sky because Ryan and Kurt traveled 100+ miles offshore to catch this fish!
I will probably have a better chance going after a bluefin tuna, because we can stay "inshore" inside Cape Cod Bay, off Chatham or near Stellwagen Bank.
The below pic is for sure a pic of a hard fighting giant bluefin tuna - which is numero uno on my bucket list.

It may hard to imagine but tunas off Cape Cod can grow to be 1,000+ pounds, and each year fishermen catch them that large.
Below you can get a glimpse of how truly massive these fish can be. Keep in mind the tuna caught below by MFCC member captain Bob Hovey and his friend is actually a relatively small bluefin tuna.
Some day that will be me trying to hold that fish up.
When that day comes, it will truly be a day I will never forget!
Thanks so much for reading my latest blog post. I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Yes Ryan. True words, It was fun up in PEI non the less, It will be awesome to get my first one
i’m right there with you, Garet. I have a few other tuna species under my belt but never a bluefin. Maybe you’ll get one this year when the bite turns on!! Nice article.
Yes Doug. I am keeping my fingers crossed
I hope to be on the boat when you hook up. Good luck.
My to Jake. That would be fun, Hopefully sooner then latter
Hey Garet,
I look forward to seeing your name on the MFCC Derby leaderboard for Tuna. They should be around soon. Congratulations on your graduation. Great accomplishment!
Hay Dex. Well thank you, I hope so to
PEI was a great time despite not hooking a giant. We did see some on the surface and marked some on the sonar.
You will get that tuna eventually my friend! Never give up.
