Never EVER Give Up! September 21st Surfcasting Report

Over the weekend I walked and fished more than 27 miles from Nauset Inlet to Race Point without catching a single fish. That is like 1,000 casts without catching a darn thing!

Yet this morning the wind shifted and I just had to hit the beach again one last time. The seas were raging and I felt like it might bring the "big boys" in.

What ensued was one of the most memorable surfcasting experiences of my entire life! Click play below to watch footage of the largest fish of the morning.

Beneath the video, MFCC members can download a Google Earth image, and a photo of the sandbar fished, as well as information about the technique, best plug and most productive tide.

  • I am going to cape cod this summer and had some questions about what to use. We normally go to paces near Province town. I was wondering where some good spots for striped bass are and what to lures to catch them with.

  • Ryan – I remebered you mentioned your Mom’s surgery, was it two years ago? Please say Hi from us and pass on to her our wishes for continued good health news, nothing is more important.
Congratulations on your Thoreau/Beston experience! Fishing the whole time adds another dimension to the experience, a deeper connection to the ocean than just observation. Very Cool!

    • Hi Jane! Yes she had a surgery 2 years ago and then another this past winter. I will definitely pass along your well wishes! Thank you very much for that 🙂

That trip along the backside was one to remember. I think you and Tom would ver much enjoy walking a portion of that beach (if you haven’t already). Tight lines!

    • Thanks Greg! And thank you for your tips regarding fishing the backside beaches.

I believe I found that bar you mentioned in your email. It looked incredible when I was there at night and there was bait all over the place. However not a single predator feeding on them.

I will keep trying though. Tight lines!

  • Congratulations on your accomplishment!
I did fish some fishing at sunrise on Monday morning near Corporation Beach. The wind was howling and the waves were terrific but I was able to catch and enjoy the splashes from few schoolies before my line got tangled and did some bird nests and I had to quit. Were you still up on the PT area?

    • Very nice! Even catching schoolies in rough surf like that is a blast. Very happy you found a few.

The area I was fishing is a well kept secret 😉 Good luck out there this week Emil!

  • Nice catch Ryan, and in the middle of the day! Can’t beat hooking up on the wild beach in conditions like that. Congratulations!

  • ive been out of touch for a while, but i remember the day you first got the idea. please tell me, were you able to do it all in one day? if not did you sleep on the beach? what a great adventure that must be. no better nights sleep id say!

    • Hey Steve, I do believe I COULD have completed all 27 miles in one day if I was not fishing and purely hiking. My legs felt real good after doing 17 miles on Day 1.

However I chose to fish a lot and take probably 1,000+ casts the night of Day 2 thru Day 3…which really slowed me down. Plus I chose to “rest” however to be honest I might have gotten just 1-3 hours of true sleep.

The nights were cold, damp and spooky with coyotes running all around me. Plus it is illegal to set up tents on the National Seashore, so the sleep I did get was out in the wide open, exposed to bugs, animals, sand shrimp etc. The stars were fantastic but I was not comfortable. LOL

Myself and Shane Uriot (26 yr old ambitious filmmaker) captured a ton of video footage, which we’ll be creating a film/documentary out of. I really think everyone here on MFCC will enjoy it immensely. I have a terrific feeling about all of this!

  • Ryan,

Thanks for sharing and putting your experience into perspective. We all love to catch fish, but it’s so special when you have to work for the reward.
    Great stuff!

  • Ryan ! I’m living a dream through you ! You are an inspiration ! Loved following you on your trip ! Psyched how it ended ! You deserve the best !

  • I knew you would be there and I knew it would be good. If I had not just got off a weeks vacation i would have been there myself. Congrats

  • Incredible, this has me pumped to do some more fishing after I work tomorrow. I’ll put some good use to working at a tackle shop and get some info out of some of the local fishermen :). Also I’ll definitely be purchasing one of those MFCC Guppy pencil’s.
