The First 40 Inch Striped Bass of the Year

On Tuesday of this week while flying my drone I spotted bluefish, as well as several large striped bass I believe to be in the 40 inch range.

At the time I was fishing from my 12 foot aluminum boat with My Fishing Cape Cod member Alex Ridgway.

It's impossible to know for sure, but based on past experience I believe some of the bass I saw to be in the 40 inch range. Click play below to check it out! ?

Despite being surrounded by striped bass, Alex and I had an extraordinarily difficult time getting these fish to bite. We caught bluefish using soft plastics and magic swimmers, but we could not hook any of these big stripers.

I think we may of been more successful if we had live bait such as live pogies or live mackerel. I also feel our chances would of been better had it not been 9AM with perfectly sunny skies and super calm conditions.

All that means to me is that I will have to get back out there and try again! I still do not think there are a lot of 40 inch bass on Cape Cod right now (it's been a slow start for big bass this year) but at least I know there are a few around.

I will keep you posted with what I find out there this week. Good luck if you make it out fishing and tight lines! ?

  • Hey Ryan great footage. Just a quick question for you. When will you start the weekly podcast again ?

    • Hey Bill ?? With regards to the podcast we are doing things differently this year. Instead of a weekly fishing report podcast with the guys from the bait shops, we are focusing on interviewing influential members of the MFCC community. You can listen to our first podcast of the summer season here, in which we talk with MFCC member Nick Caparell about “5 Tips for Transitioning from Freshwater to Saltwater Fishing.”

The weekly podcast had a great run, but it was time for a change. I hope you can understand, and good luck if you make it out fishing this weekend. ?
