Most Cape Cod Canal fishing reports are saying that the fishing has been very hit and miss. Therefore, renewed motivation is the best way of describing what I felt after hearing a Cape Cod Canal fishing report about a buddy's 40 pound striped bass. Needless to say, the good news of a big Canal striper was a much needed boost to my morale.
Right then and there I decided to forgo just about everything I had planned and instead fish the canal hard. Fortunately I had a nice window in my life schedule to allow such an excursion. The weather, at least for the evenings, was looking good too.
Cape Cod Canal Fishing Report July 10-11
In season's past fishing the Cape Cod Canal, I have had good success during the month of July bouncing soft plastics like a 9 inch Slug-Go along the bottom. In some instances, a school of good size stripers 25 pounds and up would settle along the bottom for a tide or two, and I would pick them off here and there with the Slug-Go.
Yet for these two nights I wanted to try something new, or more accurately, unearth an old school Cape Cod Canal fishing technique that isn't used all that often anymore. Can you tell what I am alluding to based off the below photograph?
Yep, those are eel skin rigs and I was desperately hoping to feed one of them to a big bass. My idea was to spend all night bouncing these guys along the bottom. I figured if there were any large stripers in the vicinity they would definitely take notice.
I was pumped and I could tell that I would have no trouble forgoing some sleep  to stay up all night jigging.
