This offshore Cape Cod fishing report was written by MFCC Contributor Andrew Massard and took place Sunday, September 28.
Mike and I left the dock at Oyster Harbors Marine at 2:30 am and enjoyed what will probably be the calmest ride to the canyons I'll ever experience. We could see the reflections of the stars off the water and the phosphorescence lit up the hull of the boat like the underwater lights were on.
It was magical to say the least. Unfortunately, the magic ended once lines hit the water.
Throughout the day we battled weeds constantly. There wasn't a second gone by where one of us weren't clearing a line.
We managed 7 mahi, with one really nice 20 pound bull, early just north of the tip of West Atlantis. There was a temperature break 8 miles north of the canyon, but because we arrived early we opted for structure instead of a break.
We trolled up and down each wall with no luck. There was one other sport fish in the area who managed to raise two blue marlin; getting one to the boat.
Saturday night 30 boats capitalized on a great yellowfin bite at the Fishtails; everyone loaded their coolers to the brim. With the sketchy weather window most boats opted for Sunday night, but when the fleet of 200 boats showed up that afternoon hoping to find the fish they were no where to be found.
Average Sunday night was 0-2 fish per boat...
A friend spent Sunday night at Veatch and had a similar time as Mike and I; managing a few mahi, a lost tuna, and a few small swords. It seems as though things at the Canyons are slowing down, especially the eastern canyons.
If there are fish there the weather windows are keeping boats at bay and good intel hard to come by.
For now it seems like east of Chatham seems to be your best bet with the hot bluefin bite.
