This week I encountered thousands of schoolies while fly fishing from my kayak off Cape Cod.

We are certainly blessed to be seeing all these small stripers so late in the season! Perhaps they will stick around for a few more days – dare I say weeks!

The following kayak/fly fishing trip occurred earlier this week on the morning of Wednesday November 2nd. These fish were still here as of today.

As the weather gets colder there will be more black midge hatches on the kettle ponds in Southeastern MA.

The stocked trout from last year will key-in on this food supply, and the new stockies will soon begin to figure it out…eventually.
The best flies for imitating these hatches are a midge pupa, size 14 and 16 on a long leader tapered to a tippet of 5x or 6x.

I was a bit worried this past Sunday because the wind had been blowing out of the southwest for 24 hours and the seas had a chance to really build.

However at around 2am the wind died out and the seas calmed down to a point where it was quite comfortable.
Even so, three out of four people onboard got sea sick, however the fishing was great! From the first drop the fishing was pretty much lock and load with Jerry (the only one of the group that did not turn green) being the high hook by far.

This October I’ve been surfcasting different locations, including spots around the Greater Boston area, in search of late-season striped bass.

I am having fun exploring new places, and catching a few stripers here and there.
During this trip (which took place on October 25th) I was surprised to encounter hundreds of cormorants, diving and feeding.

With so many cormorants in the area, I figured there must be bait around. Can you imagine the amount of baitfish required to feed a giant flock of cormorants?

I plan on chasing stripers right through the winter, but with November right around the corner, largemouth bass are now biting hard.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to catch a largemouth in a pond right now is to use what is known as a Rooster Tail.
Rooster Tails are great lures for kids to use, because the technique is so simple, and because they catch almost everything that swims in a freshwater pond on Cape Cod and elsewhere.

If you follow the Canal Today thread in our forum, then you’ll see folks are still catching schoolies, with the occasional keeper mixed in.

There have also been scattered reports of larger bass up to 30 pounds being seen and caught in the canal area over the past week.
Without a doubt, large stripers have become much more scarce and difficult to find all throughout Cape Cod and the Islands. However you still have a chance of hooking into a fish with some shoulders.

The striper fishing for me the past 72 hours has been challenging.

There have been some good pushes of fish through parts of the Cape (we’ll talk about that later) but for me the fishing has been very hit and miss.
On Thursday night I had this decent trip jigging on Cape with 8 bass up to 30 inches. On Friday and Saturday I decided to head off Cape and explore Plymouth Bay via kayak.

Last night I spent the hours of 7pm-10pm bouncing Al Gag’s Whip-It-Fish along the bottom of an inlet.

In this particular area, striped bass often “pave” the bottom, holding in shallow depressions waiting for a meal to be swept by.
A 1.5 ounce Whip-It-Fish (or other jig style lure) is the perfect weight for inlets like this one, in which the bottom is only around 10 feet deep.

This October I’ve been chasing stripers as they migrate south through the weed beds, ledges and rock piles of Buzzard’s Bay.

Surfcasting here is very different than surfcasting in other areas throughout Cape Cod.
Aside from the swift currents and huge rocks, private property and no trespassing signs are posted all over creation. Buzzard’s Bay is a challenging place to fish.

Before I dive into this report, I would like to mention that not all marinas allow fishing from their docks.

I recommend asking your local harbormaster if fishing is allowed, before you step foot onto the docks, especially at night.
However, if you can find a lighted marina where it is OK to fish (and if that marina is chock full of bait) you can do quite well during the month of October.

Last week during the howling NE winds, I had the opportunity to fish a lighted dock where stripers of 25+ pounds sometimes congregate.

Ryan Collins Back during the weekend of October 9th, I had the pleasure of joining a group of My Fishing Cape Codders for a surfcasting trip on Martha’s Vineyard. The weather was pretty challenging the first day and night, but on my second day the skies cleared up and the sun shone through. My Fishing Cape

Ryan Collins Early yesterday morning, while fishing a rock ledge covered with eel grass, I hooked and landed my first striper for the MFCC Derby. The fish was caught in one of the coolest spots my cousin Kevin (host of the podcast) and I have ever fished for striped bass.  I never would of caught the fish
