Cleaning Up The Cape Cod Canal

If you fish the Cape Cod Canal with any sort of regularity, then you have probably noticed the trash which accumulates in the rocks and in the surrounding areas.

I'm not going to point fingers or place the blame on anyone. Instead, I want to inspire as many people as possible to take the initiative upon themselves to help keep the canal clean!

Fortunately I am not alone in this endeavor. On Saturday April 21st myself and a group of My Fishing Cape Cod members, along with AmeriCorp and the US Army Corp. of Engineers spent a morning cleaning up the "Big Ditch" in preparation for the busy spring/summer season.

We had a really great time and we definitely made a positive impact! Please click play below to watch the video from the cleanup.

This video was filmed and edited by MFCC intern Andrew Burke. Andrew is available for hire and can be reached via [email protected]

As we look forward to the upcoming fishing season at the canal, I would like to personally pledge to pickup as much trash as I possibly can each and every time I go fishing at "The Ditch."

If you also make a pledge to pickup trash at the canal (instead of just complaining about it and blaming others) then I know we can make a real positive impact in helping to eliminate the litter which inevitably develops during the busy season.

Please let me know what you think by commenting below, and as always, tight lines and take care!

  • I do clean ups periodically at the pond in our neighborhood. Amazing how much stuff accumulates there, so imagine how much goes into the bays and oceans.

    • You are definitely right Peter, so much of it ends up in the ocean. Fortunately we are pretty lucky here on Cape Cod, that the currents seem to sweep a lot of the trash out to see. In other areas of the world (like some spots I’ve visited in Costa Rica) the currents sweep all the trash onto the beach. I would imagine some of this trash doesn’t even come from Costa Rica, but from countries located thousands of miles away.

  • I always pack a shopping bag or two in my back pack. Always a great way to keep track of my own trash and pack out a little extra. Takes very little effort and helps clean up just a bit.

  • Great post Ryan and applause to cleanup volunteers. Sorry I couldn’t make it.
Been there, done that (during season) and, as a rule I leave the ditch with a full bag of (?) that always seems to be there.
Good laboratory practice and other shared work areas have a general rule after use to leave it cleaner and better than you found it and the canal is just such a shared place.
The newly established minks are doing their share clearing the rocks of rats and other vermin, we can do the rest.

  • Hey Ryan it was great meeting up with MFCC members cleaning up the Canal. We just gotta practice what we preach and hopefully others will follow and lead by example 🙂
