A Birthday On The Water: Fluke Fishing with Captain Jimmy “The Greek”

by Marc Savaria

The morning of August 14th started at around 5AM for my son and I with a quick stop at Dunkin for coffee and breakfast sandwiches. After all, it's never smart to go on the water with an empty stomach, especially when you are going on a fluke trip 30+ mile trip offshore.

Next, we headed to the Bass River boat ramp in Yarmouth.

Here we met up with 2 other anglers, Sam Liu and Ted Alexiades, both members of My Fishing Cape Cod, for a 6AM departure with Captain Jimmy "the Greek" of On Time Charters

Onboard this trip were My Fishing Cape Cod members Samuel Liu, Ted Alexiades, Marc Savaria and Marc's son.

Captain Jimmy welcomed us on board a well maintained and safe 34’ SeaVee center console right on time and with a very positive attitude which was very encouraging.

On our way to the fluke fishing grounds of Nantucket Sound, we saw a lot of marine life, including bonitos jumping out of the water, as we headed southeast pass Monomoy Point towards Nantucket Island.

During August of 2024 MFCC offered three fluke trips for members with captain Jimmy. We hope to offer more in 2025!

The weather was picture perfect, with an extremely calm ocean and a beautiful sun that was not too hot. In fact, it felt more like a Fall day then summer.

The drive went smooth, and we were well entertained by Captain Jimmy the Greek as he was sharing all his fishing knowledge, how he became a captain, and how he came to America.

Weather and sea conditions for the August 14th MFCC fluke trip could not have been any better!

We arrived at our first fishing spot at around 7:30am where most of the fleet was fishing for fluke. Overall, the first hour of the morning was slow fishing according to our captain.

Despite catching a few black sea bass and fluke with a good tide and good moving water, captain Jim decided it was not optimal so we made a move 2 miles south and away from the fleet.

The author, Marc Savaria, with a nice fluke. Although the crew was catching fish at the first spot, captain Jim decided to leave the area to find better fishing. Fortunately the move paid off!

Capt Jimmy focused on a few honey holes in deeper water (80 to 90 feet). As we got to the new spot the fish finder lit up with fish. The move ended up being the right move, as we started to catch an endless amount of very large black sea bass.

Our second spot of the morning produced nonstop action with jumbo black sea bass.

With so many doubles onboard and our high and low rigs garnished with frozen bait, we easily caught our limit of sea bass.

We quickly filled up the live well with sea bass and even a bonito without hooking it - the fish wrapped itself around the rig :>)
