My Fishing Cape Cod Holiday Gift Guide

Lauren Collins

I'd like to say I am very good at a lot of things, but most importantly, it would be shopping! I realize though that I am speaking to a "fisher people audience" who would probably prefer to never hear about nor speak about shopping.

But people, the holidays are coming.  Tis the season to give gifts to friends and family, and there is nothing worse than being in a crowded mall and waiting in lines. You will encounter crying children and frazzled adults!

And then all of a sudden you realize you forgot to buy wrapping paper, so back out you go into the apocalypse that is holiday shopping. So this year, instead of hitting the mall and big box stores, lets shop online at the MFCC website!

This may be the right time to hand your computer over to your significant other so they can see everything. Or do what I do, and just email the shopping cart to your significant other so all they have to do is click "buy."  LOL my poor husband....

So here is a line up of the 2018 MFCC Holiday Gift Guide, with all the products and experiences we have to offer, to make your life easier so you can finish your shopping and get back to watching those fishing videos you love so much this time of year. I've even included what is new and most popular this year at the Goose Hummock and Canal Bait & Tackle.

Remember, MFCC members can use their special member discount code to receive 20% off many of the products shown below.

Stocking Stuffer #1: MFCC Pencil Poppers

Available in 2 ounce and 3 ounce versions, My Fishing Cape Cod pencil poppers cast like a missile, and "walk the dog" perfectly across the surface.

These wooden poppers are handmade by the Guppy Lure Company and are built to last! The 2oz Mini is the ideal pencil popper for fishing the beach or from boats, and the 3oz Jobo Jr. is perfect for fishing the Cape Cod Canal.

Over the past 3 years my husband Ryan has caught dozens of striped bass of up to 40 pounds using these poppers. The lures were even featured in the first-ever episode of My Fishing Cape Cod TV on NBC SportsBOSTON!

Stocking Stuffer #2: MFCC Bumper Stickers

We have 5-packs available of MFCC bumper stickers, which are always the easiest stocking stuffer, because everyone needs a bumper sticker, right?

Throughout 2018 season MFCC bumper stickers were spotted on route 3, the mid-Cape highway, on canal bikes, YETI coolers and 5 gallon buckets.

Stocking Stuffer #3: MFCC Burgee Flag

Recognize other members of the My Fishing Cape Cod community while you're on the water or at the canal with this 12x18 burgee flag.

Both sides of the burgee are printed with our logo in full color with a lining in between so nothing is see-through. Use the grommets to hang your burgee on your boat or your canal bike!

These flags are 100% polyester, fully hemmed on all sides and feature extra reinforced stitching.

Stocking Stuffer #4: ANGLR Bullseye

The ANGLR Bullseye is a Bluetooth enabled tracking accessory that pairs with ANGLR’s free fishing app to make marking catches and waypoints as simple as clicking a button.

One click logs a catch. Two clicks drops a waypoint. Bullseye is a simple way to track your fishing trips. Here's a video which explains more...

My husband Ryan began experimenting with the Bullseye and logged several of his fishing trips last week when we were in Mexico. You can learn more about the Bullseye and purchase one by clicking below.

For Under The Tree #1: Cape Cod "Canal Buster" Plug Bags

Now available in two different versions! These bags are exactly the same, except you choose whether you want the My Fishing Cape Cod logo, or the Striper Gear logo.

Unlike other bags on the market, these plug bags can easily store large lures commonly fished at the Cape Cod Canal, such as the 9 inch Magic Swimmer and large Guppy pencil poppers.

In fact these plug bags can even store lures and jigs intended for bluefin tuna. The bags are deep and wide so you will never have to deal with tangled up lures again.

The bags also feature compartments and sleeves for storing leader material, bucktails jigs, metals and soft plastic baits. There is a mesh sleeve for your water bottle, a spot for your fish gripper and more.

There are no grommets or drainage holes, because this bag is specifically designed for fishing the canal. The bag is made out of a durable polyester that resists hooks (so in other words, your lures won't get tangled or hung up in the bag).

Everything you need for lures and terminal tackle can be conveniently kept all together in these new for 2019 canal plug bags.

For Under The Tree #3: Fishing The Cape Cod Canal Book

Some of the best surfcasting in the world happens not on a beach, but along the banks of the uniquely positioned Cape Cod Canal. Seven miles long and 480 feet wide, the Cape Cod Canal, connecting Buzzards Bay to the south and west and Cape Cod Bay to the north and east, offers the striped bass fisherman unparalleled opportunities–a fishery unlike any to be found, on any coast. The paths to successful fishing in this unique environment are fully explained in FISHING THE CAPE COD CANAL.

One key to fishing the Canal is knowing the tides and how they will affect the fishery. Another is understanding the migration patterns of the striped bass. A third is perceiving how adaptations in traditional fishing tackle—rods, reels, and line—must be made. Yet another is developing awareness of which lures catch fish, and how those lures are best presented. All these issues, and more, are fully explored in this exceptional book.

Author D. J. Muller is a recognized authority on Northeast surfcasting and has been fishing the Ditch for over fifteen years. He is the author of The Surfcaster’s Guide to the Striper CoastStriper Strategies, and Striper Tales. He lives in Brielle, NJ

From The Goose Hummock: Pratiko Big Game Gripper

As you might already know, I am not up to date on what's popular in the world of fishing gear.  I could easily tell you many other popularities of the world, but for the sake of time, I got in touch with Phil from the Goose Hummock to ask what would be on his holiday list this season.

"The Pratiko Big Game grip is a great idea for the tuna guy who has everything.  It has just come out and is ideal for swimming fish before successful release or keeping."

The Pratiko Big Game Gripper is as big as they come.  Featuring a claw that will open and close along the mouth suitable to lip fish over 400 lbs!  It allows you to handle the fish, without the need to use a gaff.  Thus creating a more humane way to catch and release pelagic species.

From The Goose Hummock: Strategic Angler Lures

Phil also recommends checking out the Strategic Angler Lures, as they are as much of a collectors item, as they are an effective lure.

For casting to bluefin tuna, Ryan recommends the Espada-F Series in the Saury-Halfbeak.

The Espada series is a true-to-life sized lure inspired from Pacific Saury and Ballyhoo. Expert anglers will find this lure extremely versatile since its action can be modified to fit their needs. Available in both floating and fast-sink, the Espada series is a must have lure for offshore and surf applications. A perfect mid-sized lure with hardware to match the toughest fish in the ocean.

Other top lures during 2018 included:

From Canal Bait & Tackle: Canal Magic Swimmer

For those of you who love to fish the canal, here is a line up of the most popular lures from from Canal Bait & Tackle.  I can imagine this list might be helpful too if you're like me and your eyes glaze over when looking at a wall of lures that all look the same and you have no idea what the difference is.

So here's the first lure to consider purchasing - the Canal Magic Swimmer....

Ryan swears by the 6.5 inch transparent Canal Magic Swimmer that is pictured above and below. This is the lure that fooled the 30-80 pound roosterfish he caught a few winters ago down in Costa Rica.

Obviously these magic swimmers also work well here on Cape Cod when chasing striped bass and bluefish, whether from boat, the beach or at the canal.

From Canal Bait & Tackle: Canal Bait Ku-Bomb

These 4 ounce plugs are made for long distance casting and are available in three different colors - ghost white, mackerel (shown above) and yellow white belly.

The Ku-Bomb will work from the beach/boat, but it's really designed to be fished at the canal, where super long casts are sometimes necessary to reach breaking fish.

During 2018 the following lures were also very popular:

    • There are a few minor differences (actually they are improvements) to the bags. I think people will be very happy with them. This week I will try to get some new photos and new videos of the bags up on the site, which will make it crystal clear what additions have been made. ??
