Herring are an important food source for osprey, endangered roseate terns, and various freshwater and saltwater fish species.
These impressive fish spend most of their lives in saltwater, however they always return to spawn in the same freshwater river system in which they were born.
Herring can be hindered from reaching many spawning areas because of dams and river blockages. Fortunately here on Cape Cod, we have groups like the Cape Cod Salties who volunteer to clear debris from herring runs, which helps increase the likelihood of a successful spawn.

Ryan,
I was in Mashpee yesterday and happened by herring run at Mill Pond. It is in great shape and water was high, oh yeah, it was jammed with herring. Can only get better going forward.
Thanks for the herring report Jack! Seems like they are showing up strong right now all over the Cape. Great to see.
Great video…will be over in Falmouth for a week, starting on may 11…maybe run into you again at nobska lighthouse…tight lines!!
Sounds great David ??No reports of fresh schoolies yet here on Cape, but I would imagine they will be here in full force by the time you arrive in Falmouth.
Great video Ryan! Very interesting info.No wonder why the little plastic swim shads work so well in catching fish! They look just like herring! We just arrived on the Cape for a long weekend and I am excited to get in some fishing! Thanks!
Good luck this weekend Leslie!
Are you going to try for stripers or stick to freshwater?
I was at South Cape Beach at 445am this morning! Trying for schoolies! it was foggy and cold. Ended up fishing around Falmouth but no fish yet!
Kudos to you for giving it a try Leslie. Seems like a “later than usual” start to the season with the cold spring we had, but the stripers ought to start showing up any day now. ?? Good luck!
