Herring are an important food source for osprey, endangered roseate terns, and various freshwater and saltwater fish species.

These impressive fish spend most of their lives in saltwater, however they always return to spawn in the same freshwater river system in which they were born.

Herring can be hindered from reaching many spawning areas because of dams and river blockages. Fortunately here on Cape Cod, we have groups like the Cape Cod Salties who volunteer to clear debris from herring runs, which helps increase the likelihood of a successful spawn.

  • Ryan,
I was in Mashpee yesterday and happened by herring run at Mill Pond. It is in great shape and water was high, oh yeah, it was jammed with herring. Can only get better going forward.

  • Great video…will be over in Falmouth for a week, starting on may 11…maybe run into you again at nobska lighthouse…tight lines!!

  • Great video Ryan! Very interesting info.No wonder why the little plastic swim shads work so well in catching fish! They look just like herring! We just arrived on the Cape for a long weekend and I am excited to get in some fishing! Thanks!
