Cape Cod Fishing Report June 17 | A Perfect Night On The Beach (Part 1)

The temps were warm and the air felt like summer. That, plus the fact that my waders have a hole in them, led to me wearing gym shorts and going barefoot. Fortunately in this section of Cape Cod, soft sand is the norm, and I wouldn't have to worry about stepping on sharp rocks and barnacles.

I left my car as the sun began to sink low in the sky. There was a slight chop and breeze, which I thought smelled a bit saltier than usual. I was headed towards a section of sand which I felt would provide me with a fantastic chance of encountering keeper-size striped bass, and if all went well, I would arrive at the perfect time and tide.

This trip began with a terrific walk through a classic Cape Cod dune path. Eel grass and rosa-agosa bushes were all around. Terns, plovers and sea gulls flew overhead.

The setting sun illuminated the dunes. Each little sandy hill was bright green and bursting with color. Summer has most certainly arrived on Cape Cod-at least I felt that way during this particular trip.

Finally I arrived at the crest of a dune, which sat on the edge of the beach. I followed the path downward through the eel grass and rosa agosa bushes.

It was good to see the ocean. There were relatively small waves crashing on the beach (compared to the size of waves which I have seen crashing here before). A moderate breeze blew across the ocean, and I knew right way that despite the warm air temps, this would be a cool Cape Cod night.

An Impressive End To The Day

I had to hustle all day in order to make this trip happen. I'm light years behind on email, and an endless list of tasks which seems to grow by the minute. Yet all that melts away when I am part of a scene like this.

My head was clear and my mind was at ease as I trudged along through the sand. The tide was now near low, which was perfect for the spot I had in mind. I had a bit more walking left to do, but I couldn't help but stop every so often and observe the setting sun.

And made my first cast of what would be the most productive night of fishing I have experienced all season long.

I am still thinking about this trip and cannot wait to get back down on the beach later tonight. It is trips like this one that make me realize how fortunate I am to be able to fish with regularity on this spit of sand we like to call Cape Cod.
