(07:55):
Well, up next on this week's edition of the My Fishing Cape Cod podcast is our great buddy Sam Mullen from down behind the counter at the beautiful Goose Hummock in Orleans, mass. Sam, how are you this week? I'm

(08:06):
Doing great ke The weather's been cool. It's been rainy. What? I actually like that being a Cape Coter sometimes it's nice getting out of the sun. It's pretty

(08:14):
Sweet. So I was thinking of you this week, Sam, because I know you like that kind of cooler north wind and we've had cloudy cool kind of north windy days here. It's pretty much your paradise in August.

(08:26):
Yeah, it really is. It is. Having these days in August, it feels like the fall's already here and there are some, actually some signs of being falling here with peanut bunker.

(08:35):
So we'll dive right into to the report, Sam, talk about peanut bunker, talk about the bait. I also know the last time we chatted too, there were some early reports of Albee's. I know there's some bonito definitely reported around. What are you hearing in terms of the peanut bunker and the funny fish as well?

(08:53):
Yeah, absolutely. There's definitely a lot of peanut bunker ranging from Osterville to over to Bass River and then up and up and over to Woods Hole in that area. Um, but there's been, you know, limited Albe, they're here, but they're not in huge groups, so, so from Kayak it's a little struggling for shore, obviously, but if from a boat you might be able to keep picking up. I know some guys that have been picking 'em up. Uh, you know, the regular spots ville and then over to Bass River in that area, you just kind of need to find the birds and you'll find the fish. But when they're on peanut bunker, they're ready to chew. So if you can find them, you know, just throw a nice big profile and that'll be pretty good for the albee's and the bandido, same thing. Uh, you know, just look for the birds. And there's been more bons 'cause they've been here a little bit longer than, than, uh, than Albee's. And then actually bags this morning, money bags, like Pete got a, uh, had hooked into a nice Spanish mackerel, but he lost it. It could've been a nice table fare for tonight, but, uh, he, he blows it. So, you know, and lo lost that Spanish mackerel, so

(09:50):
You hate to hear that. Did it, did the hook pull what happened?

(09:54):
I think so. It just took a nice jump and then like, they always do, they're like, they're like, they're fly outta the water and shook and, and pulled the hook. So

(10:02):
Yeah, it's, it's a really cool time of year when you get all these different species that have moved into this water and the peanut bunker, you know, a lot of times too, they'll make their way, you know, into the bay and, and I get 'em right here on the beach inside the bay as well and create some pretty epic, you know, early fall feeds where stripers are kind of pushing 'em right up on the beach.

(10:23):
Yeah, I, I, peanut bunker is some of my favorite bait, you know, when you can actually just get on such a good blitz and, you know, you'll get the occasional pretty solid sized bass, you know, you know, they'll be nice to slot fish, but the occasional nice, like 38 40 inch fish will be pretty nice when you're using some lighter gear. You know, it's pretty awesome.

(10:42):
In terms of inside the Bay, Sam, is it continue to be kind of quiet where it's really just kind of snapping wire, uh, jigging the bottom and then the, the the occasional tube and worm type bite. Are we still in that kind of summer pattern here in the bay?

(10:58):
Yeah, it really is. It really is like that. It's gotta be snapping wire, but off of standing next snapping wire's pretty solid, so that's, that is good. So, you know, it's a consistent bite, you know, it's not like there's really, you're picking fish, you know, it's actually been a pretty consistent bite off the sandy neck for Ji and Wire, so that, that's nice doing that. And then tube and worm is more like you're picking fish, but, uh, but yeah, snapping wire, uh, that whole strip for Barnstable in that area has been pretty good.

(11:24):
It sounded as well too, like the last couple of weeks that we've chatted, it's really begun to pick up on those backside beaches, uh, that you frequent, uh, especially the surf casting. Give us a report on how that's going.

(11:36):
Yeah, absolutely. The backside beaches have been very good and, uh, it's been a little quieter with people 'cause it's nice 'cause uh, the weather's been a little snooty, but I mean, the whole range of, of fish has been good. You know, it's just, they like that cooler weather, so that's what, that's what you gotta think about. And they like that onshore wind, you know, the weekend turns, it might, you know, start to, the fish might start to go back out with the nice weather, but it'll, they love southwest s well too, but, but to end the day and, and then into the night it's been, it's been very good.

(12:04):
And what do you think those fish are kinda on Sam out there? What have been some effective methods of, uh, targeting those fish, especially at night?

(12:12):
Just the, uh, the classic, uh, you know, like, uh, swimming plugs have been really good and uh, you know, the classic Esri minnows hydros and then, uh, pencils to end the day has been good. And people have started been using, uh, some bucktails as well, uh, you know, to end the day as well. And picking up fish up off the bottom using Bucktails is always great. Um, you know, it's just a single hook, you know, it's nice easy release. You can, you can constantly keep catching fish instead of dealing with, you know, six hooks that are two trebles. It's kind of a pain in the butt.

(12:41):
And moving offshore a little bit, maybe out into the sound or down south of the Shoals, uh, we hinted at, you know, fluke really being kind of on the horizon, right? The good fishery for Fluke heading into late August into September. Uh, we saw some early signs of Fluke being available to us, you know, over the last couple of weeks. Has that picked up at all?

(13:03):
Yeah, flukes been very good. Danny out of the shop has had some nice two pass good weekends with his buddy and they've been using the flutter spoons from Monomoy Tackle and they've been doing really well, just stripping it with some squid. They've been actually crushing it. They, uh, they would, they took a little farther south trip, more towards the Nantucket, uh, you know, still in range, you know, from, you know, if you went out a second Tucket or something like that or coming out out outermost or something, you know, it's a 15 mile ride. But, uh, they, they were doing pretty well on and they were catching, you know, some solid, you know, 22, 23, 24 inch fluke, which is very nice for the table. You know, you actually have some, you know, thick, you know, fluke to, so easier to filet and definitely more meat.

(13:42):
Well, that's great to hear. And yeah, they definitely are a very tasty eating fish. Any other funny species kind of floating around in, in the sound or maybe down south of Cape Cod that I haven't chatted about with you? I know Ryan got a, I think it was Oahu out on the Canyons the other day. I think that was like two weeks ago now, but seems like there's some interesting fish floating around the area.

(14:04):
Well, yeah, the most interesting that I've really heard is just in the sound is with that crazy tarpon. Yeah. Uh, I don't, you know, I don't, that was pretty wild. Just an absolute fluke of a catch. I mean, you know, chunk and, uh, blue fish. I mean, that's just incredible. I mean, I, I don't, it's one of a kind of a fish to be a catching up here. I mean, they, they do travel in some weird areas and I've heard in years past some murmurs of actually smaller tarpon being on Monomoy this time of year. Hmm. Those were far fetched. But I, you know, who knows though, I mean, with these water temperatures climbing up, I mean, who knows, maybe in five years we could start catching Mahi in the sound. That'd be pretty sweet.

(14:39):
Sure would be. And you mentioned Monomoy. That's one thing I I didn't hit on real quick. How's the report for Monomoy this week?

(14:46):
Yeah, it's been solid and people have been catching fluke there as well. You know, they don't have to go all the way to Nantucket. People can actually been catching fluke and in the rips down there and then, uh, bass and, and blues have been solid. It's just, you know, slowly like, you know, not nearly as good as it, you know, was, but I mean, it's still good, but, uh, still being able to cast, casted fish and then working your way up north towards the backside of the Cape, you know, and, uh, ranging from there, just looking for birds is your best bet.

(15:13):
And the last thing, Sam, is just the offshore fishery. I know giant fishing is closing down. I think it's today or tomorrow. Give us a an offshore tuna report.

(15:23):
Yeah, tuna will be wrapping up today, uh, this Thursday. It was trying to get to Sunday for that the last day of the week, but I don't think it'll happen. It'll definitely be, you know, closing down today. So, uh, but it was good. So that's why it's closing. Um, but uh, and then as, as of Wreck Fish, it's been pretty cold. Uh, you know, being around close to home, you gotta kind of travel for these fish. You know, you, the only things I've really been hearing is the dumping and the claw, which is a good little ride depending on where you're launching from. But, uh, it has been good down there, you know, and then obviously you might be able to get a some elephant and stuff like that and, you know, as long as bluefin and some mahi. So you kind of get like a little trifecta there instead of just some bluefin. But your best bet if you wanna to just get bluefin close to home would be maybe to just go in some deep water east of Chatham ranging all the way from, you know, churro down to Chatham. Um, that would probably be your best bet. Maybe some bars and maybe trying to get on something with a Jager, maybe some cast and just look for birds, but just go into some deeper water. There's usually some fish just kind of poking along that you might be able to pick

(16:26):
Up. I know I saw on Instagram you pop out of a Yeti the other day, so that was pretty cool.

(16:30):
So yeah, we got the, uh, really big Yetis and we got a bunch of mugs and stuff like that and, and Ramblers. But also actually right now I'm in Phil's office, stickering and the new, uh, product of the Goose Alvy snacks with my buddy Luke. Uh, he stick it all, we got the hard snacks, we got all the Albee snacks off plastics, we got the hooks, we got everything. We've got, you know, a a you know, we got the super snacks from uh, Albee snacks. So, and we got quite a bit of stuff from fish snacks, which has been good 'cause we get constantly asked about it in the shop and it's, uh, pains me to say no, that we don't have it. But now we do have fish snacks.

(17:06):
All right, so head on down to the goose, see Sam and pick up some fish snacks this weekend. Sam, it's a pleasure chatting with you. Thanks for the report and we'll talk to you in the next week or two.

(17:15):
Absolutely. Thanks Kev. Tight lines.
