Every so often I like to invite a My Fishing Cape Cod member with me on my fishing excursions. Earlier in the season I fished with MFCC member Jeff Richard and we did real well from the beach on Outer Cape Cod (you can read that report here).
Recently Dick Glockner, who has been supporting the MFCC community since this site began 3 years ago, let me know how much he would appreciate a fishing trip with me on my boat the Miss Loretta.
Dick is one of the nicest guys around. He treats people the way I feel people ought to always be treated, and I really appreciate that.
Heading Out OTW With Dick & His Daughter Beth
For this trip Dick brought along his daughter Beth, who is a school teacher enjoying her summer vacation.
I could feel the positive vibe in the air as we headed out OTW and I instantly had a good feeling about the trip.
The sunrise was nice and there was refreshing breeze sweeping across the water.
I had a general idea of where to go, and how we were going to fish. I explained that we would be using the light rods and would not put a line in the water until I felt we had found an area supporting a lot of life.
The Pressure Is On!
Dick and Beth had traveled over an hour for this trip to meet me at 4:30AM. So that means they probably woke up around 2AM. Needless to say I wanted to get them hooked onto a good fish.
The pressure was on to find some life. Yet after more than four hours of checking different places I began to worry that the fish may just not be in the places I had expected to find them.
I reminded myself that this happens all the time to me-which is the truth. In moments like this I focus on staying positive and upbeat, and eventually the fish usually show (emphasis on usually!).
Dick and Beth reminded me that a day on the water is terrific, and that catching a fish would be a bonus.
Finally, A Sign Of Hope
At around 9AM I stumbled upon what I though may be a small school of stripers. Using my sonar, as described in this MFCC members' article, I set up a drift I felt would bring us in direct contact with the small school of fish.
Beth and Dick dropped their lines into the drink. I prayed for a bite. The universe responded and Beth's rod bent over. Phew!
This was no world record, but at least we had the skunk out of the boat.
Based on the sonar markings, I felt we had found a small school of large bass. Yet I suppose I had thought wrong, based on the sub-legal striper that Beth had just landed.
I released the bass unscathed and began to strategize how I could get Dick and Beth into some slightly larger fish.
Dick Comes Through In The Clutch
At this point the sun was high in the sky, the wind was picking up, and we had brought just one schoolie to the boat. I explained to the crew that if we kept at it and didn't give up, good things would come. I tried my best to believe my own preaching - LOL.
I then caught glimpse of a tern which was hovering above the surface of the water. I wondered what the tern was looking at, so I brought the boat over the spot and BINGO the sonar lit up with fish!
Dick dropped his line overboard, I held the boat in place, line began peeling off his reel, he set the hook, and the rod doubled over nearly touching the surface of the water.
It was immediately apparent that we were going to be here for a little while. Dick had hooked up on the light rod, the wind was howling and the boat was drifting quick. All those variables added up together to create the most epic battle I have had on my boat all season long.
Throughout the entire fight, Dick was adamant in announcing that this was the biggest bass of his life, without a doubt.
Finally we got color on the fish and I could tell right away that the be bass was 40 pounds at a minimum.
I leaned over the gunnel, reached into the water and yanked the big bass aboard. Even I was astounded at its size! Definitely the biggest bass I've personally seen all season long.
I put the bass on the scale and she topped out at 43 pounds. It was the largest bass Dick had ever caught, and I was amazed that he knew it all along!
It sure is nice when things fall into place.
Want To Come Fishing With Me?
Every so often I invite a My Fishing Cape Cod member to come along with me on a fishing excursion. If you'd like to come fishing with me sometime, then a good first step is joining the My Fishing Cape Cod community.
If you are already a MFCC member, and want to come fishing, I would recommend becoming an active participant in our forum, commenting and sharing MFCC blog posts, and overall just being a supportive and friendly member of this terrific Cape Cod fishing community.
I notice these things and am always on the lookout for someone I feel is doing a fantastic job of helping to grow this site and it's community of more than 500 active members.
Tight lines and take care,
Ryan

Ryan,
Great story – Enjoyed meeting you by chance yesterday at the
Marina – Keep up the great work. The site continues to be very
informative
Great meeting you as well Ron!
Always be sure to come say hello
Ryan,
dick and Beth must have enjoyed the whole outing – ggoiung on thee water to a location, watching you trying everything possible to “hook up” and finally catching some stripers – one huge one. Glad he was able to land that one in the boat, especially with light tackle. Great job on being available to your members- it’s hard for a single person to keep that momentum going – it’s like 500 to 1. Again, it’s nice that you share your experience and techniques with other MFCC members.
It was a great experience Don.
Yes it sure is challenging keep up with everything as the site grows. But it is a great challenge and I would not have it any other way.
I appreciate your support and participation, and I will keep on sharing my experiences, techniques etc.
Tight lines!
Would you have it any other way?
It’s nice when things work out Art!
Another satisfied customer … nice job (again) Ryan … seems the sharing is really good on the fishing karma
Thanks Jeff, and I agree that it does seem to bring about some good fishing karma.
I’ll have to keep it up!
Great fish! Great job hanging in there after a long quiet morning. Just look for the birds! !
Just look for the birds is right!
If it was only that simple
That thing is huge! How long did it measure?
I’m not sure Brian but I would estimate around 47 inches
Nice story Ryan. Congrats to the gentleman. I am sure you made his season.
