Hello again! It's me Garet.

I recently went out fishing with Ryan, and this time we went to the Smugglers Beach Fish Pier in West Yarmouth.

The fish pier was a very easy walk from where we parked.

Note from Ryan - Parking and access is super easy at the Smugglers Beach Fish Pier.

A short walk from our car and we had our poles in the water.

Now squid is what we used for the bait. We also used squid at our last trip to the Dowses Beach fish pier.

Note from Ryan - Squid works exceptionally well for bottom dwelling fish when fishing Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound waters or Buzzard's Bay waters

I had to work after fishing at Project Forward so I let Ryan handle the bait. That way my hands wouldn't stink at work!

I think the environment was a good one for fish, because the pier is located in a "canal type setting" which I think is normally good for fish.

Note from Ryan - The pier is located at the inlet of Bass River.

There was current moving the water in front of the pier and a marsh nearby.

We did not catch anything but it was a good time anyways. It would have been a better time if we caught even some little fish, but our effort was to no avail.

You heard me right guys-yes we got skunked , but still had a fun time. Can't win them all!

Note from Ryan - I'm blaming this skunking on the time of the year! LOL If you go here during the summer you'll have an excellent chance of catching small fish like scup and snapper blues.

Ryan and I created the below video to give you a better idea of what fishing at Smuggler's Fish Pier is like.

The Bass River boat ramp is also located near to the fish pier.

Note from Ryan - The Bass River boat ramp provides good launching and access to Nantucket Sound for kayaks as well as much larger vessels.

Take care,

Garet

  • Hey Garet, Great article. I live very close to Smugglers and use the launch there often. When my grandsons visit in the summer, we can usually be found on the fishing dock. Looking forward to learning more about stripers and other salt species.
Keep up the good work, Warren

  • I’m right across the river in West Dennis … I fish the jetty you can see across the river. I would think that besides the fishing deck at Smugglers, the jetty at the end (very close to the fishing pier) is good. You are right at the mouth of Bass River, so there should be Bass in Spring and Fall, besides fluke and sea bass in the summer

    • Sounds excellent Jeff. We actually saw some fish breaking right next to that jetty but I couldn’t reach them from the pier.

In addition to the fluke and sea bass you mention, one might even be able to find tautog by those jetties during May.

Good tips and I hope you had a great Turkey Day!

  • This is our favorite beach. It is only a 4 minute drive from our home. We probably go here 4-6 days a week during warm weather. I visit here year-round, sometimes to run the beach.

    • What a special thing it is to have a beach that close to your home. I was fortunate to be able to walk to the beach as a kid growing up in Bourne. Very appreciative of that.

Do you know if that fish pier gets super busy during the summer Brian?
