It was a bright and sunny morning as I pulled into New Seabury Marina, located behind Popponesset Island in Mashpee.
For this trip I had received an invitation from Mike Starr (who joined My Fishing Cape Cod way back in 2014) to hop onboard his beautiful boat Joint Venture.
The wind was light and variable and it appeared we would be enjoying a comfortable 100 mile ride out to the canyon shown below.
Also onboard were several of Mike's friends along with Kyle, a professional mate who works onboard a 78' Sportfishing boat in Quepos, Costa Rica.
The ride through Popponesset was a beautiful one, and the sea conditions were calm in the Sound and as we worked our way through Muskeget Channel.
We cruised at over 30 knots and before I knew it we had arrived at the canyon. We put the spread in the water and began trolling in the "shallow" 450 foot depths along the edge of the continental shelf.
Not 15 minutes into trolling and one of the bars got slammed! Mike hopped on the rod and began fighting the fish. After a fun battle we gaffed a 60 or so pound yellowfin tuna and had successfully landed the first fish of the trip.
Kyle and Will reset the lines and I decided to fly the drone and take a look at the spread. 10 minutes went by when I noticed a big splash on one of the starboard side bars. I heard the guys yelling "Marlin! Marlin!" and my heart began thumping faster.

It was definitely a trip of a lifetime, and thanks for your comment Mark. Regarding the mako, I believe you can no longer keep them. I think this new rule went into effect during July of last year. Here is a link with more info.
