Big Surf = Big Bass | Cape Cod Surfcasting Report

Yesterday morning I fished the wide open beach for the first time in a long time. The wind was howling, the waves were huge, the rain was pounding and the fish were around.

I even watched an enormous humpback whale do a full breach! The whale soared up out of the ocean and came crashing back down, sending white water high into the sky. It was nuts!

The video below recaps the best fish of the morning-a bass I estimated to weight at least 25 pounds.

2 Google Earth images of the sand bars where I was fishing. The exact spot where I am on Cape Cod is not obvious, but with some detective work you can probably locate the general area.

  • Nice stuff. I could see the mung on the line was that a problem? In those conditions out there, even in less wind but that direction, I sometimes run into that making it unfishable after a while.

    • After a couple hours of heavy wind, I noticed that mung was becoming an issue. It was not bad at first but it definitely got progressively worse.

I think using a topwater plug may of helped minimize the amount of mung I picked up on the line.

  • Ryan ,”Thank you ” for taking my Dad and I out ?Thursday nite in the rain . We had a great time. ?? Your amazing . ? The time flew by much too fast, can’t wait to see the rest of the pictures and videos you took. We can’t wait to go out with you again when I’m back at the Cape, keep up the web site, it is truly exciting ,informative and eye opening . Enjoy your Vacation! Dan Wagner Dad ( Ed )

    • The surf was intense! I enjoyed every second.

Weather is looking good for the backside beach hike. I hope to start on Friday and finish up at some point over the weekend, God willing.

I just checked Google Earth and I think the hike will be closer to 30 miles (as opposed to the 23 miles I mention in this post > https://myfishingcapecod.com/23-miles/)

I’m crossing my fingers for a west wind which will make for pleasant conditions during that hike. However a good NE blow could bring the fish in again close along that stretch from Nauset to Ptown, like they did yesterday.
