It had been nearly a month since my last Cape Cod surfcasting trip. Incredible how time slips by, wouldn't you agree?
The last time I hit the beach I caught a bass that weighed around 40 pounds. Â Big fish like that 40 pounder are a real possibility right now on Cape Cod.
During this trip my idea was to target a boulder field I have not fished since I was a kid. The NE winds had calmed and the weather was perfect.
I had a very good feeling as I stepped out of my car.
To get to the beach I meandered down a steep vertical path.
I have not walked down this path in years and I noticed the residents had installed a convenient hand rail. I am sure this handrail will come in handy several decades from now when I am a bit older and not so steady on my feet!
At the end of the steep vertical beach path was a wooden deck overlooking the beach and the ocean beyond.
The brisk northeast wind had calmed, and sea conditions were flat calm. I could tell it was going to be a gorgeous night on the beach.
I looked out over the water, half just enjoying the view and half scanning for signs of life.
When suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I caught glimpse of something out of the ordinary, making a commotion on the surface of the glass calm water.
I hustled down onto the beach to get a better view.
Just then something larger tore through the ball of baitfish.
Were they stripers!? Bluefish!?
I frantically tied on a plug, eager to start my night off with a bang.
