Cape Cod Fishing Forecast for December 1st

by Ryan Collins

Sure the saltwater fishing season has slowed down, but here's an overview of some of the fishing opportunities still available in the Cape region during the month of December. Good luck if you make it out fishing this month!

Topics covered include:
00:00 - largemouth bass fishing
02:04 - holdover striper fishing
02:37 - brown trout fishing
03:27 - December tuna fishing
04:22 - escape to the south!

December has arrived and there's still fishing to be had if you're up for giving it a shot, which is why I felt inspired to do this December 1st Cape Cod fishing forecast. We'll touch upon some of the fishing opportunities from holdover stripers, to trout, to tuna. We'll even talk a little bit about Costa Rica.

We start off in the video by hitting on using swim baits for largemouth bass. This is something you could do right now until it gets really cold. Jack Renfrew, a local Cape Codder, shared with me the Huddleston swim bait, and in the video you see a clip of a nice fish I caught last year at this time on this killer lure.

The next thing we talk about in the video is striper fishing. No doubt the vast majority of striped bass are south of Cape Cod, but some fish do stick around into the month of December and holdover during the winter

However, you're not going be fishing the wide open beaches during December for these fish. If you want give striper fishing in December a shot, then you need to go back into the estuaries, which is where the stripers are going to be.

The odds will be stacked against you, but if you want to give striper fishing a try this December, then your best bet will be in estuaries, which is where some stripers will spend their winter.

Many of Cape Cod's ponds are stocked with trout and fishing for trout can be a great activity during December. I love just trolling or casting Baker Jerk Baits but needless to say there is a multitude of different tactics that work for trout.

The Cape will have great fishing for stocked trout all winter long and I'd recommend checking out the Trout Time 2022 topic inside our members forum where people post daily updates.

Baker JLD series jerk baits are some of my favorite lures to use for trout.

By December most folks have put their boat away for the season, and my guess is that the majority of people reading this probably won't be fishing for tuna this December. Nevertheless I figured I'd mention it because these amazing fish are still around.

The commercial tuna season reopens on December 1st and I know at least a few captains who will be out chasing them. If you are one of those people, then good luck and be safe!

I know it's not Cape Cod, but during this time of the year some anglers are preparing to head south. December in Costa Rica is when the rainy season is ending, and is when the dry season (and the perfect weather) is just getting started.

In conclusion, there are still plenty of fishing opportunities during the colder weather months here on Cape Cod. Plus with less people around, there is no better opportunity for solitude and peace and quiet.

With less people around I find wintertime to be best for spotting coyotes and deer. I came across these two fellas on a morning walk at Ellisville State Park in Plymouth during March.

Aside from fishing, right now is a wonderful time for taking a simple stroll on the beach or a hike in the woods. You never know what you may see, from whales to coyotes, turkeys to seals.

Tight lines! 🎣
