Get Ready for Late Summer Bonito!

by Quinn Mucha
Hello My Fishing Cape Cod! My name is Quinn Mucha and I'm an 18 year old fisherman about to start my first semester at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Growing up on Cape Cod has been the best! From blue crabbing with my grandfather, to mating on charter boats and everything in between - fishing has remained my obsession.

Today, I wanted to share a few tips and tricks for catching the much sought after Atlantic bonito during late summer and the famed Fall Run on Cape Cod.

Specifically, I've been catching bonito the past few years inside Cape Cod Bay, so hopefully the fish will return to the bay again during late summer and fall of 2023.

This time of year is my personal favorite on the Cape, so let's dive right in.

Bonito Tackle

To begin, in terms of tackle for these fish, I like a reel anywhere from size 2500-4000.

I like to use 15-25 lb braided line, and I connect my braid to a 15-20 lb fluorocarbon leader using a uni-to-uni knot.

For a rod, I like to use a 7’-8’ medium-light action rod.

As far as lures go, I love any brand of epoxy jig. For weight, I  use 3/4 oz or 7/8 oz.

Pictured above is a bonito I caught on a 7/8 oz brown epoxy jig in Cape Cod Bay. On this day I witnessed bonito breaking on baitfish underneath birds.

I’ve found that in certain circumstances, color matters a ton, especially when the fish are keyed-in on one type of baitfish.
