Today’s Big North Wind | July 16 Canal Fishing Report

Yesterday I caught up with Jeff Miller of Canal Bait & Tackle and we chatted about how the fishing has been lately at the Cape Cod Canal. According to Jeff, there have been several huge fish caught recently, including one bass that tipped the scales at a whopping 49 pounds!

However, most of the fish caught the past few days have been on the small side. You just need to hit the right school at the right time in order to fool one of the "resident cows" that have been hanging out in the Big Ditch.

With a big north wind blowing in today, I am very interested to see what happens fishing-wise at the Canal. Good tides plus a big north wind can sometimes spark a blitz.

In today's 8 minute podcast report, Jeff and I discuss what's been happening and what to "expect" at the Canal.

  • I was at the East end from 4 am – 8 am and nothing….mid-canal all afternoon until 5 pm and nothing…pretty much what I heard from the rest out there. Someone said there was a huge school of Blues hanging out in the CC Bay that may have spooked the Stripers and ate the baitfish. Not sure if this was true, but kind of bummed since I took the day off of work. Well, at least I met some nice fishermen and got a few more tips, so it wasn’t a complete loss!

      • Hey, Ryan, I finally caught my first Canal Striper last weekend! Well, I missed the blitzes, but brought in an almost-legal guy at 4 pm. Went down to the canal to try out my new rod and now I can finally sling those poppers out to the middle! Plan to get a bigger one next time!

        • That’s awesome Lori! Nice work. You have put in the time and it’s good to see you rewarded.

Definitely let me know when you get that first big fish down there. Gluck!
