One Hundred Stripers in 4ft of Water

The striped bass fishing around Cape Cod continues to be stellar!

Last night I was fortunate to catch a 47 pound striped bass and my dad caught a 45 pounder. There were plenty of smaller fish mixed in too.

The great news is that you certainly do not need any fancy expensive boat to have a chance at catching these beautiful fish!

For example, my friend Jason Mazzola and I encountered hundreds of striped bass in just 4ft of water the other day while fishing from a 12 foot tin boat powered by a 6 horsepower engine.

As the stripers cruised through the shallows, I managed to quietly film them with my GoPro camera. Most of the fish were schoolies but we did see a few bass in the 20-30 pound class.

You can watch the footage by clicking play below.

The bass were very finicky and difficult to fool. However later in the day Jason, myself and MFCC member Bill Couture would return to this area and catch fish up to 25 pounds.

Late tonight I am heading up to Prince Edward Island in Canada with friends and family to try for a giant bluefin tuna.

Our weekly podcast will still publish here to the site late in the day tomorrow, and we have many more exciting Cape Cod videos, reports and posts in the queue for the next several days.

Tight lines!

  • Hey Ryan in 4 ft of water what lures are you finding best to fool these finicky fish. Any ideas on what they are feeding on?

    • Hi Sam! Live eels have been working for me, as have rigged dead eels. The fish have been following plugs to the boat, but I cannot get them to hit.

I am guessing they are cruising around slurping up crabs and small baitfish like Tom Cod. There’s also been a flock of cormorants nearby, which tells me there is a healthy population of small fish in the area.

A very experienced Cuttyhunk fisherman once told me to look for the areas with the cormorants, and you will find the bass.

  • I clicked the download button and all I see is a non-descriptive aerial photo of water. How much info is that providing?
