Andrew Burke
Hello My Fishing Cape Cod! I hope spring is treating you well, and you're able to spend some time on the water.
The warm weather is (hopefully) here to stay, which means the fishing action throughout Massachusetts will continue to heat up!
Personally, I haven't done any serious saltwater fishing since the fall. I've been getting my fishing-fix by targeting freshwater species. Most of it has consisted of trout fishing, but thanks to the warmer weather, the largemouth bass are more willing to bite.

Largemouth Bass Video Report
Above is a video report from my YouTube channel "Seven Stripe Fishing" where I discuss my most productive locations, lures, and retrieves during this trip. It's worth noting that this pond was not actually on Cape Cod. I was exploring and fishing an new area a few miles outside of Boston.
These were among my first largemouth bass of the season, so I get quite pumped throughout the video LOL.
Additional Details
The first lure I throw in this video is Rapala Shadow Rap in the "haymaker" colorway, which is akin to the colors of a yellow perch.
However, any jerkbait that suspends (neither sinks or floats) in the water when paused will be a great choice.
Twitching a suspending jerkbait on slack line gives it an erratic stop-and-go action that has been very effective recently. Be sure to incorporate some long pauses into your retrieve! Many of the come when the lure is at a complete standstill.
The other technique I mention is the wacky rig, which looks like this:
Rigging a Gary Yamamoto Senko with a hook placed right in the middle of the bait is effective on largemouth bass, especially when they're picky.
Simply twitch the senko along very slowly, let it free-fall to the bottom at some points in the retrieve, and wait for the strike. Letting the bait fall on slack line is key in order to achieve a natural action, so keep an eye on your line. If the slack suddenly jumps, reel up and set the hook!
In Conclusion
Spring is here, and the Cape Cod landscape is finally beginning to warm up. It's safe to say that the fishing action will heat up from here as well! Right now is an excellent time to get on the water in search of early-season largemouth bass.
However, the water temperatures are still cold. The bass you encounter might still be lethargic from a long, cold winter. If that is the case, fishing a twitchy, finesse style presentation can be the ticket to a productive day on the water.
Thanks for reading, and tight lines everybody!
Excellent report Andrew! I am always impressed with your fishing prowess. Yes, the Wacky Rig is a very effective way to fish for Largemouth, Pickerel and Pike. I had a friend show it to me once on a lake in Vermont and I thought he was joking. Great to toss into holes in weed beds when out in a boat or kayak.
Thanks for the kind words Dex!!! How’s your 2017 season so far?
Ned and I went to Narragansett last week. Have not been able to get out other than that. Hope to hit a few spots before the MFCC breakfast on Sunday.
Very nice!
Great warm up before the big stripers arrive 😉
Thanks Ryan! May should be an excellent month of fishing for both stripers and largemouth!
Love me some Larrys
