Squid Fishing on Nantucket Sound

by Ryan Collins

*Please be very cautious when boating or kayaking this spring on Cape Cod. The water is extremely cold and if you were to fall overboard, then hypothermia will set in quickly. I currently wear a Gul U-Zip drysuit along with a high quality PFD from Stohlquist to increase safety.

Springtime squid action on Cape Cod occurs during late April and early May. I feel your chance of success will increase as soon as the water temperature hits 50 degrees, which is when loligo squid invade the shallows of Nantucket Sound to spawn.

  • Ah yes nothing like fishing for squid , for both bait and eating. At times they can be tough to engage and other times they are in suicide mode. The day bite from a boat is one way and fishing at night from a boat with lights[lanterns] is another way. You can get more of the other species feeding on them to show up in the light which adds to the excitement.
Then again you have local areas from shore where they also can be gathered at times. THe Sandwich marina on a west current change at night. The Piers from Hyannis, PTown. or if you want to travel to Newport Rhode island under the Newport bridge has its times as well . Give it a try you might find it to your liking. Peace and Prayers
