I'm excited for this week, because I feel there's a great chance that at least a few fresh migratory stripers will move into the waters off Cape Cod.
I'm ready to hit the sand and splash the boat, knowing I have a legitimate chance of putting a bend in the rod.
In this post I'd like to share with you some things you can expect to find if you venture out fishing on Cape Cod during the next several days.
Chasing That First Fish Of The Season | An Interactive Map
I can feel the excitement in the emails and Facebook messages. Like me, you are also chomping at the bit!
The other day I received a great tip from MFCC member Chris French. Chris wanted to let me know about a pretty slick interactive map software called ArcGis.
With the software I was able to create the below interactive fishing map, which provides a brief overview of what we can expect on Cape Cod this spring. If you are new to the Cape Cod area then I feel you will find the map quite useful.

Beautiful Landscapes All To Yourself
The wonderful thing about fishing Cape Cod during April is that you can experience incredible natural settings without the summer crowds.
I took the above photo during this incredibly scenic Cape Cod surfcasting trip.
The road had been swallowed up by the ocean. The view from a nearby dune was absolutely spectacular.
There was a not a soul for miles during that recent fishing trip. It's quite easy to find solitude right now on Cape Cod.
For example, the beach in the below video, which I filmed using a quadcopter and GoPro camera, will be jam packed with people in just a few short months. Yet for now, it is a wide open wilderness with plenty of deer, fox and other animals.

Have The Dandelions Bloomed? It's Almost Time For Tautog
There's an old saying on Cape Cod that the tautog begin biting when the dandelions are in bloom, so it might pay to keep an eye on your garden this week.
When the bite does get going, it will be hard to beat the effectiveness of using green crabs for bait.
Throughout Buzzard's Bay you can find tautog holding tight to rock piles. Try anchoring close to the rock pile and drop your green crabs directly on top of the tautog.
Typically you'll find out quickly whether or not anyone is home.
Tautog can also be caught from shore in a few special spots. The west entrance of the Cape Cod Canal is one such area.
Get Messy With Mackerel
Atlantic mackerel will start to infiltrate (if they have not already) the waters off Cape Cod this week through May. These speedy fish are colorful and very fun to catch.
If you've never caught mackerel before, then here is a video which I feel will help you out. I filmed this video over the winter - check out my beard!

In Conclusion & Looking Forward
Good luck if you are able to get out fishing this week! Be sure to keep us posted with how things are going for you by posting in the forum.
In the meantime I will continue to do my best trying to find those first stripers of the season.
I plan on having a new fishing report live on the blog by tomorrow, so stay tuned.
