Top 6 Surf Caught Stripers | May 17-May 30

by Ryan Collins

The spring saltwater fishing season is really starting to heat up, and members of MFCC have been reeling in some awesome fish. In this post, we'll take a look at some very impressive surf caught striped bass from this past week.

All of these catches were originally posted in the 2024 Surfcasters' Thread inside our members' forum. The Surfcasters' Thread has proven to be a great resource for all things surfcasting.

Technically there are more than 6 bass pictured below, but certain fish were caught while fishing with others during the same trip and I didn't want to exclude people's fishing buddies.

So with that "technicality" out of the way, let's dive right in!

6) There's Life on the Outer Cape

It seems to me the action along Cape Cod's Great Beach, from Chatham in the south to Provincetown in the north, hasn't heated up quite yet, at least when compared to the action members have been encountering along the beaches of Cape Cod Bay, Buzzard's Bay and the Sounds.

Nevertheless, members Carol Girard-Irwin and Jean Lapiene have been working hard this spring along the beaches of the Outer Cape. On May 28th they were rewarded with this healthy bass.

The first of many more to come I am sure!

Pictured here is Carol Girard-Irwin with a beautiful fish caught this week on May 28th. Carol's been a member of My Fishing Cape Cod since 2017 and it's been great having her as part of the site!

5) Eels are Producing

Derek Jones found some good action on May 27th while fishing an inlet along the south side of the Cape. According to Derek...

"Outgoing tide, over cast conditions, full moon(ish), and some eels at a south side inlet produced. What a great outing. Put the time in this weekend and it really paid off. Covered a lot of ground and with my network of trusted anglers was able to seriously narrow down where the fish were holding."

Derek Jones joined MFCC back in 2020 and made over 190 posts inside our forum. Thank you Derek and good luck out there this week!

4) First Ever Bass for Doug Jardine

Is this the largest striper caught recently by members of MFCC? No it is not. However it's a special one and I just had to share it.

Big congrats to Doug Jardine who caught his first ever striper last weekend on May 25th. Way to go Doug! You may now be forever hooked!

Doug Jardine joined as a member on May 23rd and caught his first ever striped bass 48 hours later on May 25th. Not too bad Doug!

3) Needlefish and Rocket Lures Pay Off Big

On May 21st Mike Marcus teamed up with his friend and fellow member Carl Leitao.

The guys found a great spot that was holding an incredible amount of very fat striped bass. They tallied 11 bass, two slots and 9 over slot size with Carl’s 40 incher the prize of the evening.

Carl Leitao caught this 40 inch beauty caught on a needlefish.

Needlefish and Rocket lures were the ticket on this night.

Since joining My Fishing Cape Cod Mike has made over 1.5k posts and has racked up over 9.3k likes on his content. Way to go Mike! Thank you for being a member.

2) Topwater and Twitch Bait Bite

Grant Stark and Nick Caparell teamed up on May 18th for a memorable night in the surf.

According to Nick...

Bodacious night in the surf with @Stark134 , the bite I’ve been looking for. Caught 10+ nice bass, started with top water slams and then the yozuri twitch bait hammered them once the sun set. Grant with the best bass of the night at 42”. Tightlines

Grant has been a member since Jan 2023 after moving from Arizona. In his short time with us he has received over 1,000 likes on his content. Thanks Grant for sharing so much.

Nick has come a long way since he joined MFCC back in 2017. He started off primarily a freshwater angler, but has since transitioned into surfcasting and boat fishing for a variety of saltwater species.

1) Eight hours of Sleep in the Past 72 hours pays off

Here's what Calvin Toran-Sandlin had to say about his experience fishing the 72 hour window leading up to May 18th...

Chasing the window. Long hours and late nights over the past weeks, stalking those inky haunts, waiting or hoping to intercept that one fish.
Eight hours of total sleep over the last 72, biting winds and spitting rain are enough to make you reconsider your decisions and question the process. @marshallr and myself dug in to work through that momentary magic of slack somewhere well after midnight. Rewarded with a pair of mid to high 20s and a beautiful mid 30.
Play up! play up! and Play the game!

Calvin Toran-Sandlin and Marshall Roy make a great team. You'll see posts from both of these guys throughout the 2024 Surfcasters' Thread. Nice work guys and great photo!

Check out the wound on this bass's tail! Perhaps it is the result of a seal bite or shark? According to Marshall it appeared to be an old wound. The bass'  jaw was also beat up.

In Conclusion

There's been a lot of great catches and stories shared recently to the 2024 Surfcasters' Thread. I honestly could have made this post go on for decades if I was to include everyone's catches!

Thank you all for posting and providing us all with inspiration to get off the couch (and our phones) and go fishing in nature. Keep up the great work.

Tight lines! 🎣
