10 Tips for Surfcasting Cape Cod and Costa Rica | Seminar Presentation

With winter now looming on the horizon, I'll be spending time going through the MFCC website and updating content and older seminars that have become "buried" beneath newer posts.

One such seminar is the presentation I gave in 2018 at Surf Day, which is an event in New Jersey dedicated to surfcasters.

Today I'd like to re-share the 54 minute presentation, which covers a lot of strategies, equipment and other details I make sure to pay attention to when surfcasting the Cape for stripers, bluefish and other species.

And of course (as alluded to in the title of the presentation) I also include a few tips for surfcasting in Costa Rica - which is surprisingly similar to surfcasting here on the Cape.

In this presentation we'll cover:

  • How to properly release striped bass
  • My recommended surfcasting gear
  • Surfcasting & exploring the beaches of the Outer Cape
  • Fishing the flats during June
  • How to jig and pop at inlets
  • Surfcasting beaches near estuaries
  • Fishing boulderfields with current
  • Fishing bubble weed beds at high tide
  • Fishing the Magic Swimmer
  • Fishing spook plugs
  • Fishing the north winds of September & October
  • The future of Cape Cod's striped bass fishery

I'm fortunate to have grown up on the beach, and I've been fishing since kindergarten. I have great family, friends and fishing experiences to be thankful for. Just being out there is enough-catching fish is just a bonus!

  • Great presentation, lots of great info. Beautiful videos! Some info I have seen before but different bits of info ” get absorbed ” at different times! Great Job Ryan!
