2014 MFCC Cuttyhunk Island Trip

More so this season than ever before, folks have been expressing how much they'd like to fish with me and other MFCC members. This is terrific and I am excited so many people are interested!

Due to the demand I decided to organize the first ever MFCC Cuttyhunk Island Trip.

On October 3-5 myself and a limited number of MFCC members will travel to Cuttyhunk Island off the coast of Cape Cod to surfcast for striped bass. If you're a MFCC member and are interested in coming, then definitely read on.

Here's What You Need To Know

Cuttyhunk Island is the most peaceful places I know of to wet a line. Cuttyhunk is also one of the most demanding surfcasting environments around.

Here's what happened during my latest fishing trip to Cuttyhunk Island...

Fishing here from shore is physically demanding.

The good news is that Cuttyhunk is also an amazing place to relax, read a book, and take a leisurely stroll "back in time." Cuttyhunk has been compared to the Martha's Vineyard and Block Island of 75 years ago.

The sunsets and sunrises are pretty spectacular as well.

The MFCC Cuttyhunk Trip won't be a "party booze it up" fishing excursion - LOL

The trip will be a fantastic opportunity to explore and fish one of the most special islands on the East Coast of the United States.

More Info About What You're Getting Yourself Into - LOL

If you think you'd like to come along, please watch the below interview with Lexi and Duane Lynch. These are the folks who own Pete's Place Rentals which is where we'll be staying.

We'll get to the island by taking the Cuttyhunk Ferry out of New Bedford.

You will be able to park and leave your car at the ferry parking lot in New Bedford.

For more information on what Cuttyhunk is like, I would recommend browsing these written and video reports of my past trips to Cuttyhunk:

So here's my idea...

I have included the cost of accommodations and the ferry rides into one "package" which you can pay for by clicking here.

You can choose to say Friday night, Saturday night or both nights. I'll be staying both nights but the decision is up to you!

Here's the link for payment again which covers accommodations and ferry rides.

Thanks! This will be a terrific fishing excursion.

Tight lines and take care,

Ryan

Please post your questions below!

  • Hi Ryan & Fellow Fishers…
I plan on getting some live eels too. I’ll bring some eats along too. As for tackle I’m going to bring a 10.6 surf rod and a light tackle 8′ Shakespeare with a Shimano Stradic 6000. Last weekend I fished Squibby and Gay Head to “tune-up” for walking the rox. Looking forward to meeting all. I’ll be on the 8:00AM boat on Friday. Ned

    • Sounds terrific Ned.

Bringing along a few live eels, and some food is a smart idea. The general store has the essential, but nothing gourmet!!! lol

I think your choice of rods and reels is perfect.

Any luck over at Squibby and Gay Head? We’ll be able to see those cliffs from Cutty.

Friday’s boat is at 9AM, but I would recommend getting there around 8:15. See you then!!!

  • Ryan,
I just read the itinerary for the trip. I will not be able to fish on Friday as I have school in Wayland until 3:00. My plan is to cach the 6:00 ferry Friday evening from New Bedford to Cuttyhunk. How do I get to our accommodations at Pete’s Place once I get to the island?

  • Just signed up and am looking forward to it. What size rod and reel do you recommend for fishing these waters? I’m thinking of using pretty light tackle like a 5000 or 6000 size reel.

    • Awesome!

I am going to fish with a 6000 size spinning reel. 40lb braid and 50lb fluoro leader.

Paired with a 10 foot Lamiglas rod.

I feel that something along those lines (perhaps just a bit lighter even) would be good.

  • Sounds awesome.let me know the rates when you can.guessing waders are a must.can you rent golf carts or anything else to get to other fishing spots

    • Nice! I expect 2 nights on the island to cost around $300. 1 night around $150. That includes the ferry ride.

Walking is the only way to get around. Golf carts won’t be available. Lightweight waders are a great idea!!!

  • Hey Ryan, thanks for the update. Do you have an idea of when we’ll be fishing on cuttyhunk? Mornings, evenings, both? Just trying to work out the logistics with the family. Thanks again for setting this up

      • Ryan
Can you recommend what lures you think will be good so I can make sure I bring multiples, thinking tackle shop acesss might be a little tough ! Lol . Also what do you think about eels at night? Available on the island? Worth Bringing or just stick with lures?
Really looking forward to this trip!
Lastly, I hate bringing too much but what are your thoughts on food? Sounds kind of limited on the island!!

        • Hi Todd!

I would bring some 6 inch pencil poppers and some swimmers of the same size. In particular I plan on bringing white Guppy 6 inch Pencils and white Danny Plugs. I’ve had good success with white slow sinking Sebile Magic swimmers as well.

Color probably doesn’t matter all too much but I will be sticking to white most likely.

You are correct, there’s no tackle shop on the island!

Eels can be very good. If it’s easy for you it could be a good idea to bring some. I will probably bring a few as well.

There is a small general store on the island that will be open for 1hr a day. They stock the essentials and you could survive just fine off what they have, but it won’t’ be gourmet!

So you could bring a cooler with some food. You will have access to a nice kitchen.

I do recommend packing as light as possible and I will be sending out a more detailed email to the group very soon.

Looking forward to seeing you and this trip in general!
