The wind was howling as my friend Jason Mazzola and I traveled through the Cape Cod Canal on his boat the "Sue-Sea-Q" south towards Buzzard's Bay. This was going to be a wet and sloppy fishing trip.
The rain began to pour as we approached the Railroad Bridge. This was my first time on the water this season and I was very happy, despite the windy and rainy conditions.
Buzzard's Bay Fishing Report | Scup, Tog and Possibly Keeper Stripers?
Last week I found schoolie stripers in secluded spots throughout Buzzard's Bay. In this trip I figured we had a chance of encountering one of the first migrating schools of keeper stripers, en route to the Cape Cod Canal.
If that didn't work, our fall back plan was to locate some lively bottom and catch a few scup and tautog for the dinner table. I soon came to realize that I was going to get soaking wet either way.
Right Now Is A Great Time To Explore Buzzard's Bay
As we trudged along through the slop, I thought about how right now is the perfect time to get out and explore the stretch from the west entrance of the Cape Cod Canal, south to Cuttyhunk Island.
During the summer the water here will be very warm, but right now it is near perfect to support good striper action.
Bottom fish such as scup and tautog can also be plentiful during the spring. Soon black sea bass will be available as well. Overall I feel that BBay is a good place to be right now.
Birds (And Maybe Bass) On The Horizon
I scanned the horizon for signs of life as we bounced along through the waves, wind and rain.
I thought I saw terns diving but it was tough to see as I squinted and shielded my eyes from the rain drops. Yet sure enough as we approached closer I could confirm that all sorts of birds were diving, just off the edge of the Canal's channel.
Were there bass working beneath these birds?
Jason decided to bring us in closer so I could take a good look.
