Guess what? It looks like we are getting a Nor' Easter, just in time for the weekend. Well at least we are for today, yet the wind forecast still looks a bit iffy for Saturday and Sunday. Obviously I hope it clears up and calms down, but on Cape Cod you just never know what to expect with the wind.
Right now the seas at the tuna grounds are probably 6-10 feet. That is way too intense for me. However yesterday was a completely different story. For the most part it was flat calm with only a slight chop predicted for late in the afternoon.
After triple checking 4 different forecasts my buddy Mazzola and I came to the conclusion that we did have a weather window to work with. And based on the weekend forecast, this weather window may be the only one get. At the last second we hustled to prepare gear, get bait and re-arrange our Thursday afternoon life schedules to allow for some Cape Cod tuna fishing.
Our plan was to have the boat in the water by 12 noon. This gave me enough time to make a run down Cape and pickup 150 pounds of frozen herring to use as chum. Maybe if we chummed like crazy we could draw the attention of any passing giant tunas, and bring them right to our baits.
I just hoped the chum would thaw out in time. Frozen chum will float back into the slick, instead of sink naturally, which is not ideal.
By 11:30AM we had all the chum, gear and a hundred other items stowed on Mazzola's center console. We were ready to go and on time.
A little after 12 noon we had the boat in the water and were headed to an area where we have caught giants in the past. The seas were calm and based on every Cape Cod tuna fishing report I had heard, there were giant tunas in the area.
Hey Ryan, great report …. where’d you find 150# frozen Herring on the Cape?
Great write up. I’m hoping to get out to the SWC early next week, any helpful hints? Are there still mackerel to be found around at the SWC?
Thanks James!
Good to hear you are heading out tuna fishing. Unfortunately I do not have any recent intel on mackerel in that area. Things out there change so quick.
What kind of techniques will you be using when you head out?
Let me know, happy to help if I can.
Take care,
Ryan
