Well, up next on this week's edition of the My Fishing Cape Cod podcast is our good buddy Sam Mullen from Down behind the Counter at the beautiful Goose Hummock in Orleans, Massachusetts. Sam, how are you doing this week? How's the weather at home?

I'm doing pretty good calves. Yeah, the ho the weather this week is, uh, been pretty solid actually. We got a little, we got a little taste of North Wind, which is nice, you know, no fog or anything. It actually dried up the air, but uh, we're back to that southwest in, uh, muggy weather, but it's, hey, it's July, what are you gonna do? You know, it's gonna be like that. It's like Groundhog Day.

But that southwest though for the Bay, guys like me, Sam, I call myself a bay brat, you know, grew up inside the bay fishing, never really left. Um, that Southwest is friendly, right? It makes the bay smooth.

Absolutely. I don't fishing the other night, uh, commercially, uh, doing some meal and it was an absolutely beautiful night. It was a light, we like West Southwest Wind and it was a great time out there. It was out. I didn't even care if it was three 30 in the morning. It was beautiful out there. Not many people obviously <laugh>, but uh, it was, it was really nice. It was perfect.

So gimme a taste of what the stripper bite has been like. Uh, we'll start inside the bay, um, maybe from Sure. And by boat, I'm guessing it's slowed down a little bit. We're kind of in those dog days of, of late July now.

Yeah, it's pretty tough at the Bay these times. I mean it's really just, uh, jigging wire and then there's been some hoochies and um, you know, it's been, uh, definitely a lot slower, you know, some, so, and worm as well, you know, it's definitely just fish are holding bottom. You gotta find some good rock structure, uh, some good eel grass and that kind of stuff, or fish and eels at night, but really that's just kind of a commercial thing. But

Also like what about out toward P-Town or like, kind of around the back? I know that there are guys out there, uh, you know, in deeper water targeting, you know, rec bluefin and then out on the corner they're going for giants and we'll get to that in a bit. But what about stripers out there? It

Definitely has been, uh, pretty solid actually still, uh, on top water and um, and uh, uh, jigging some a, the Herring Cove area to Race Point has still been pretty, pretty good, uh, which is great for Top Water in late July. Uh, they've been getting bass and blue fish, which is great, you know, uh, for anybody that likes to have nice top water blues, I mean you can't beat that. So the Pitton area is still, that's been definitely holding some fish, you know, in the, just a little slot into the slot too as well, so you can kind of get some table fare, but, uh, it's, but mostly a lot of like 33 to like 36 inch fish.

And as you work your way down kind of around the backside facing beaches, Sam, like how about Na sit, some of those surf casting opportunities that I know you frequent and are always kind of scoping out? Yeah,

It's been solid, uh, with, uh, ranging from Churro and Wellfleet and then always all the way down into the <inaudible> area. It's, uh, definitely been, uh, very good, uh, at night, you know, uh, you don't really get anything during the day at, uh, at night. It's been, it's been very good.

And how about like Monomoy as well? Is that really cooled off?

No, that's been still holding fish. Uh, definitely with casting still as well. It's still squid and sand yields and uh, you know, just kind of work your way east, uh, with that and try to get into some deeper water and some cooler water. And uh, you know, during like the high tide and everything like that there, there's actually been some stuff around like Pollock, rip, uh, and some beer s there's been some good days and uh, it all depends on when that really that cool water comes in and when it leaves and uh, you know, cuz it's so drastic over there. But there's actually been still a solid bite around there in the eastern side of, uh, Monomoy.

And then when we get out into deeper Water, Sam, we, we just visited with Ryan off the top of the show. He had a chance to get out for tuna. It sounded like the report was pretty promising. What are you hearing from the network of guys that are coming in the Goose? I know you guys have a ton of captains out there targeting tuna.

Yeah, from the small guys, all the wreck fish, um, you know, it's been kind of a little here and there and you gotta travel pretty far, you know, uh, it's been a lot of like south of the sword, you know, working your way east of Nantucket, which is quite a haul. And then, you know, kind of just been bars through the, uh, thick fog around crab. Um, know really jig bite set up and then just kind of, uh, also kind of pretty random up around peak at hill, um, in that area. People have been getting, um, on, uh, on some bars. Uh, but all for, if you want to cast, it's really, really kind of south of the sword. It is, uh, in Eastern Nantucket. It's been pretty much the bite around there for casting some, you know, stick baits and that kind of stuff.

And I've been hearing for weeks, Sam, since I've been over here, uh, you know about this fog. It's still kind of hanging around, huh? Uh, you just mentioned out there on crab.

Yeah, the fog has been pretty bad, like yesterday it had a little break, but, uh, with some north wind, but it's, it's, it's been pretty bad with the, just the South, we're in southeast and Southwest. It's been just so sick. It's been very, uh, very unsettling trying to be on the water and uh, but uh, it will break, you know, we'll hopefully get a few days where it's some, some good west and some northwest winds. Hopefully, uh, maybe get a little window out there, you know.

Now to give me just one last, you know, taste of home before I hopefully get home next week. What, what else am I missing? Am I missing out on anything else? Cool.

Uh, there has been a little bit of a fluke bite setting up. Uh, we have actually a few people from the shop going this weekend. Uh, Luke is going with his pop, uh, tomorrow Fluke. And uh, it looks like Danny will be going, uh, Sunday with his buddy, uh, rich. And, uh, they'll be fishing monomoy and, uh, they might be fishing over towards, uh, off of, uh, Yarmouth and, uh, that area, you know, um, on the sound side, uh, some deeper water and, uh, around the tire actually the, uh, tire reef. So, um, hopefully that will be good. And then, and I know it's always good to just get a nice doormat fluke or even some, you know, 20 to 22 inch fluke for the table is always so good. It's a lot of fun, you know, it's a, and it's a great fishery.

Actually. It was funny yesterday and the, it was so hot in the AC I was, uh, just watching some fluke videos and um, uh, dog sitting a pup right now. We're just chilling. And I was, uh, having some few beers and watching some John John Skinner fluke videos as I was actually thinking of doing a, um, a charter. Uh, my, my buddy that works here, Matt, his, uh, his, uh, dad and his uncle are coming up in mid-August and we're thinking of doing a charter with, uh, Mikey Abdo, uh, magic Charters out Chatham. And he's an absolute fluke slayer and I think it'd be a, a great time, just get a few goose guys together and have a really fun trip, you know.

And Sam, lastly, what's been going on at the shop? I feel like it's been forever since I've had a chance to stop in. Anything cool you want to tell the folks about?

Uh, yeah, we got a bunch of, uh, good offshore stuff and that, um, you know, and then, uh, from RJ Boyle and all that we're pretty stocked up and we got a lot of nice sea guard, uh, that came in. And then, uh, we actually just got some cool travel rods that came in, which is pretty cool. You know, people that are traveling back and people been buying them from New York and traveling back and forth from here. And, uh, that was pretty neat from Tsunami and also from Iowa, so that's kind of cool. But, uh, other than that, just pretty much regular stocked up on everything that you need to go fishing.

All right, Sam, thanks so much for carving out some time outta your busy week for joining us here and for me being over here, it's much appreciated. I know the folks are always looking to hear and from you. Uh, so really look forward to our conversation in a couple weeks when I'm home.

Sounds great, Kev. Have a great time out there.
