MFCC Intern
With an influx of excellent spring weather and quickly rising water temperatures, the month of May is off to an incredible start.
Members of the My Fishing Cape Cod community have had no shortage of fishing success in the past week, with saltwater action dominating the scene as conditions improve with each passing day.
In this post, I'd like to highlight just a few of the notable catches I have seen over the past several days from inside our members forum.

Striped Bass Fishing
In the past week especially, the striper bite has picked up noticeably on the coast of Massachusetts. Compared to the very beginning of the month, striper action is much less “hit-or-miss”, and a lot more “HIT”, with schoolie bass really starting to fill in the nooks and crannies, and some slightly larger fish in the mix as well.
Given that it is still relatively early, members of the MFCC community had an extremely active week when it came to targeting stripers on the rivers, the Canal, and the oceanfront.
Anyone having trouble getting on some fresh fish might want to ask MFCC member Mike Marcus (@StriperMadness) for some pointers, because he has been rockin’ and rollin’ over the past week!
Mike has been consistently catching schoolies on paddle tails and bucktail jigs. The bucktail got the job done on this 28-inch slot fish.
In addition, Eric Cronin (@ecronin24) has been encountering some solid schoolie action! Eric caught this traveling bass and several others at sunset this past week.
Recently, dusk, and nighttime have been increasingly fruitful for targeting migratory striped bass.
If you can’t get out in the evening, sunrise is another high percentage time to target feeding bass.
MFCC member Adam Giordani (@adam_wtwoutdoor) hit the rocks on a nice morning several days ago, and ended up landing a slot fish and several smaller schoolies.
Not bad at all for the middle of May!
In other MFCC striper news, Teddy Nesius (@tnesius123) has been putting in work up and down the coastline, and landed 9 stripers the other day on the North Shore.
Teddy's girlfriend also got in on the action!
As for the night bite, which appears to be improving, MFCC member Robbie Sturtevant (@robbiesturtevant) decided to test the waters this week.
Robbie ended up hooking into some very solid schoolies, highlighted by this near slot fish, which he landed on the outgoing tide just the other night.
As bigger fish arrive on our coastline, especially in June, I would expect the larger bass to be more readily “accessible” from shore during the nighttime. In any case, the evening is both a productive and relaxing time to hit the water right now.
Over the past week, the canal bite has been picking up as well. Tim Mugherini (@bugbear) hit the slack tide the other night and quickly picked up about ten 18-27 inch bass on small profile plastics.
Great website lots of great information I don’t get down to the Cape too many times four or five times a year I would like to know where there are some more good largemouth bass fishing spots I stay in the Dennis port area I fish sand pond West Harwich Reservoir slow Pond and Cedar Pond I catch a lot of fish out of those but I’d like some new territory to explore any inFormation that you have would be greatly appreciated I have a canoe which makes life a little easier thank you looking forward to hear from you
Hey Gary, thanks for the comment!
For largemouth bass, here are a few more ponds worth scoping out.
Ashumet, Mashpee
John’s, Mashpee
Mashpee-Wakeby, Mashpee
Wequaquet, Barnstable
Long Pond, Brewster
Countless other ponds throughout the Cape (both large and small) also hold big bass. It seems to me like the ponds which are connected to the ocean via a herring run, have some of the biggest bass around.
Gluck and keep in touch!
Ryan
Great job Brett!
Thank you Leslie!
Brett,
Great job putting this all together – no doubt May is the month when it all starts happening for fishing Cape Cod.
Brett,
Excellent report – Please continue this work!
Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback! Will do!
